Weird. Mine does not have a purge valve and the hose is (was) definitely factory.

I need to double check but I believe I don't have the green valve either.

Default Stall

Just got a ding that a new message had been posted to this forum, so I thought I'd update folks on the gas-stall issue. Here it is almost a year later, and the car has never stalled out since. But, I did run across a few tidbits of information on those canisters. If you top off your tank at fill-up there is a chance that the excess gas is diverted to the cannister, and it appears that the carbon then can become a carbon brick, and this can impede its operation (do you think? LOL), or so the article implied. Have I ever topped off the tank? Too many times to count, always trying to squeeze in that last bit of gas; old habits die hard. Since my last incident, have I ever let the tank get down to 1/4 tank or so? Yes on at least a few occasions, though I was on pins and needles the whole time wondering if the car was going to stall out and die. I've never had the opportunity to fully test my theory out, and probably never will. Given that the car is now 19 years old, am I overly concerned? Not much, LOL, and to the extent that a car ever gives us any value, this one has.

Been driving my car last few months and:

1. Only had CEL come on for P0446 2x
2. Opened gas cap 1x / per quarter tank and hear the whoosh sound.
3. Had the charcoal canister and VSV valve looked at....was told the valve is stuck closed and will need replacement.
4. Driven down to E with no issues....ran out gas 1 time but that was my fault...I pushed to see how far I could take it....thank God it ran out in my parking spot 2 blocks from a gas station.

By doing #2 above, I've been able to fix the situation.
As previously mentioned in this thread manually venting/purging the gas fumes via the gas cap method vents the system like we would with a normally working charcoal canister and VSV valve.

Willing to bet that's what 9/10 of us in this thread are going through.
Have driven about 2000 miles with no issues using the gas cap method with no problems.

More updates to come soon!

Not yet...probably going to get that replaced with the canister...

I'm at 205K miles by the way....let's start posting our mileage too guys.
That way we can document where we're at miles wise and see how that plays a factor with our fuel issues

Searching for the P0441/P0446 code issue comes up with several threads on how to replace the VSV at the charcoal canister for not too much money and a few cuss words. Assuming the canister itself is still good (and they usually are), a cheap valve, gas cap, fuel filter and vacuum line inspection should be sufficient to fix the problem.

Bingo!
Now that my car is fixed and I've passed emissions this week, I can 100% confirm that this was my problem.

I'm now @ 211k and have driven about 600 miles on the new replacement parts.

A smooth idle and slightly better gas mileage are also some benefits to look forward to after replacing the VSV. Also, no more whoosh sound after opening up the gas cap like before.

I replaced both the one under the hood myself and had a shop replace the VSV on the canister. My GS drives much better than before and best of all...no more check engine lights.

Default Best news ever

Thanks for keeping us updated on the VSV and the effect it had by replacing it. Sounds like I should look into mine now, LOL!

tiguy99, do you have the part numbers for the valves? I've searched but there's a lot of discrepancy over which part numbers are for which year models. Which ones did you use?

I used the Dorman 911602 for the rear VSV on the Charcoal Canister and AIRTEX/WELLS 2M1359 for the one under the hood.

Anytime!
If anything you'll have more peace of mind after you repair it.

I would have the EVAP system smoke test done first if you have any doubts before you buy anything.

I knew your post confirmed my issue when my mechanic said I failed the test based on a bad VSV.
Then I started getting P0446 CEL shortly afterwards...that was my tell tale sign I should look further into it
