However he warned me not to take it on a long trip because the computer would lean it out and (as suggested above) it could damage the engine.

So I am going to check my mileage now to see if it has improved. Before I changed the filter when I showered down on the accelerator, there was little response - nothing like it used to be; it just had no pickup. Now that is all gone. Pickup is fine again.

Now I find that PepBoys wants $675 for two rear shocks. Sounds like a lot.
$675 for rear shocks is crazy as hell. For a couple hundred more you could get 4 decent coilovers.

thats probably including labor right? which would make sense. most shops by me were quoting 1k to 1100 for all 4 parts and labor.

Yes, $675 was parts and labor and reuse of original springs.

Back to my original thread. The car began to cut out on me again on a long trip. No pickup on the expressway just like before; felt like it was running out of gas. Took it back to my indy and he said I needed a new MAF. So another $350.

So far it seems to be fine but I have not had it on a long trip after the new MAF. I have put 130,000 miles on this car and have not replaced the MAF before. Whether it had the original MAF (vehicle now has 230K miles), I do not know. But I guess it makes sense that the MAF was bad. When I asked them for sure if the fuel pump was really bad (wondering if it could have been the MAF all along), they did not exactly give me a strong affirmative but they did still say the old fuel pump was bad. So I will never know.

Will let you know how it does now. However my mileage increased to 24mpg on the expressway at 75mph after the new fuel pump and before the new MAF. That's within 1-2 mpg of what I got when I purchased the car.

As expected, no change in MPG at all.
