Depends on how bad. I assume its just surface rust, in that case, use a grinder or Dremel tool and carefully grind it off. If you dont have either, get some fine sandpaper, like 200 grit and sand it off. Tape the outside and inside panels off so you only grind the edges. I say do the whole door edge so it would be uniform. Once you sand off all the rust, spray some clear-coat to seal it from the elements that create rust.
Another way (less invasive). Still grind/sand off just the door ding area by itself then to seal it, use some clear finger nail polish. If not nail polish, you can get some matching ding paint from a parts store and paint over the ding. Anything to cover the exposed raw metal.
Door guards are 'good', but you still need to remove the rust and seal the raw metal so it doesnt spread.
