Buying a 98 GS400 with 250k miles... Am I crazy?

There are so many threads about buying really high mileage 2GSs.
That really says something about the reliability of the platform and the quality of engineering.
Sure hope it's still true of the 4GSs.

Bought mine in 2016 with 201k on the dash for 3100. Had records & was in good shape minus the rust on roof and cracked windshield.
Long story short, flew to Minneapolis to pickup the car, had it inspected on a lift by the owner's brother in law's shop and drove it home.
Car stopped halfway to Chicago from Minneapolis. No check engine light nothing. Had half a tank of gas etc.
After paying 600 to have it towed the rest of the way back, and having the owner refund half the towing fee etc, turned out the car needed both VSV valves replaced.
Moral of the story, make sure those are replaced as well.
Now I'm at 219k and haven't had any major issues just basic maintenance (oil changes, front & rear brakes and upper control arm).
Still need to replace the rest of front end bushings ball joints, get coilovers, and replace my starter relay.
Again basic maintenance stuff. Would I do it again...yes only with a car needing less stuff.
If you're in the market, make sure you confirm the previous owner replaced these items listed in this thread.
If the answer is yes and the price is under 4,000 grab it!
The rest of the money can be better spent on mods

Mine's at 292k miles and mine are original. I've had the car since 138k (bought in oct 2011). Still by far best car I have ever had. And drives well. Only mods are Bilsteins and Aftermarket Sway bars. Drives great.
Not sure why a VSV would stop car from running. Only think I can think of is venting. Just remove gas cap or loosen it and keep driving. Probably just prevented the venting on the tank.

RamAir, there's a thread on here where myself and a few others documented our experience with a dying VSV and Charcoal Canister.
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...15-code-4.html
Little did I know I had all the symptoms until after I replaced the VSV and VCV under the hood.

Bought my '00 Camry 5sp with 212k miles (now at 285k), and my '98 Lexus GS400 with 198k (now at 214k, and that was with the ABS taking out the speedo for a few months). With Toyota, there aren't many engine models that won't go 350k miles.
My week points is the same as everyone elses... front suspension, timing belt, Y-pipe. And a very thirsty engine.
