Key won't turn in trunk lock

At least in GM cars, WD40 is NOT RECOMMENDED in door locks. Only ENGINE OIL. WD40 I think has some solvent in it and strips protective plating off.
My trunk lock no longer opens with the key, I have to get in and work on it. I haven't oiled it in a while.
In a crunch I pull the dipstick and drip on the key and then insert, and repeat a few times. Usually works fine.
