What part of the axle did you hammer? Does this impact the axle balancing in any way? Was it just one good hit or di you have to bang at it for a while.

I hit it right where the axle connects to the assembly on the assembly side. It came lose after 3 or 4 good smacks. I did use dextron/acetone(penetrating oil) the day before that might be something you note. It didn't seem to do much harm but I was replacing the whole assembly so didn't really care if I marked it up.
You could perhaps use a piece of wood as a buffer to protect your parts but I really don't think it hurts anything too bad long as your accurate.
