Default Deal or no deal?

Mom passed away and dad is selling her 1999 GS 300 with exactly 66,007 original miles. Hardly ever driven (elderly) I've been driving Lexus and Toyota for 25 yrs so I'm excited to keep moms car in the family, but an I buying a project car?

With that many miles, probably not.

Way too many miles. I'd get rid of it.

It's a pup. Do the 100k service since its almost 20 years old and drive it until the wheels fall off.

Thank you all very much for your feedback. I'm going to grab it and keep mom's baby in the family.

The mileage is low but what about all the rotting rubber seals? The second they harden, its a blood bath on the driveway.

I considered that as well. It's garage kept but time is just that, time. 18 yrs is a long time but I'm keeping fingers crossed.

This really depends on what you have to pay to buy the car and how long you plan to keep it. Given the mileage and apparent condition the car, it is probably worth about $5-7K. These cars are not really money pits and most repairs are routine maintenance wear and tear items, Even if there are aged suspension components and other incidentals you can probably still get most items updated for about $2k (worst case scenario). If you add this to the purchase cost and the total remains around $5k you will be hard pressed to find a better option for a $5K car. There is not much doubt the GS will last you easily 5+ years.

For the miles. I'd take it. Just do routine maintenance and you are set.

Sorry for your loss. The mileage is low, and literally any car that age would need a suspension refresh so nothing out of the ordinary there. Maybe need the timing belt. I wouldnt do any other things just to simply do them though.

I might be the only one to say this, but I would sell it either way. Fix it first or sell as is, and buy a nice GS400 and GS430. I wouldn't call them super fast, but just not horribly slow like the 300. Totally my opinion. I guess in my culture a car isn't as special (especially a base GS) as a war medal or something so let's please not get into that. I feel like having my parent's car would make me sad too, again IMHO

Sorry about your loss.
Yes, it is 18 years old with an average of 3,666 miles/year. In my opinion as long as it has had regular maintenance and hasn't sat, even in a garage, for an extended period of time, you have a great car there. What? Are we going to discard it because it has some years? My car is 15 years with 99,000 miles. Should I just get a new one? And I'm not even going to say how old my wife is,...
