Default Shifting behavior, what is normal? - GS400

Hi guys,

Trying to figure out if something is up with my newly purchased GS400 regarding the transmission shifts and behavior. The 1-2 shift is very slow and almost feels like it is slipping at times. There is almost no perceptible RPM drop. The rest of the gear changes are usually very smooth, but lazy. I think I can feel the car pulling timing in between the changes. Heavier throttle causes the 1-2 shift to feel even more like slippage, but the rest of the gear changes are quick and smooth.

Fluid looks older, but nothing too bad and the level is fine. I'll be changing it all using Toyota Type-IV and a couple of drain & fill sessions.

Just curious to hear how other cars behave when in proper order. Is this typical? How would you describe the shifts in normal and PWR/ECT settings? I'm used to BMWs and other trucks where the autos are either much clunkier or 'sportier', for lack of a better term. Thanks!

How many miles? It’s probably as simple as disconnecting the battery and letting the transmission re-learn your driving style. Try putting the car in M mode and shift up and down through the gears as well. It should be smooth. The transmission on the 2GS is pretty much bullet proof so don’t worry, I’m almost at 230k and I had my transmisson fluid changed once 10 years ago at 100k. No problems whatsoever except some slow shifting on cold mornings. Once it’s warmed up she’s fine.

Sorry, should have included that in my post. Just clicked over 152k miles. I don't have any records of transmission fluid being changed, but it really doesn't look that old. I'll be sending a sample off to Blackstone when I do my first drain and fill. Just got the crush washer from the stealership.

Yep, I've messed around with M mode and it's decently smooth, except sometimes the downshifts are a bit abrupt. I contribute that though to 1) a 90s torque converter auto and 2) the large ratio changes between some gears. Give the car full throttle and it shifts smoothly and quickly at red line. I also want to inspect the transmission mount/engine mounts and see how they look.

Will certainly look into resetting the transmission brains through battery disconnect though! Thanks!

This happened to me as well and leaving the battery disconnected did a better job of fixing things than changing the fluid did. Left it disconnected overnight and trickle charged the battery. Instant and very noticeable difference.

Thanks guys. Battery is disconnected right now and I took the 4Runner to work... will report back if I notice any difference! I hate adaptive transmissions.

UPDATE: well, reconnected battery after around 4 hours and took for a drive. Can certainly tell a difference in the shift logic for the better...especially with the 1-2 shift being a bit firmer/more aggressive. Guess we'll see how things go from here. Pretty sure now there's nothing actually wrong with the transmission.

To repeat: I hate adaptive logic transmissions.
