To respond to these recent replies, I disagree with taking it to the dealer. It's too much of a blanket statement, not every dealership has the same prices or capabilities. 98-01 GS300 and 98-2000 GS400 models can not have new keys programmed through the diagnostic port. ECU replacement or EEPROM flashing is required in lost key situations. Lexus dealerships across the country routinely charge $700-1500 in these situations (and that's not including the tow bill). I've even heard quotes as high as $3,000 for a new ECU, other parts, labor, keys, etc. That's definitely not the way to go if you can help it. Very few dealers across the country offer EEPROM flashing for this situation, if yours does, they're likely subletting to a local locksmith that is capable of performing the work. Some even ship the ECU to us. There is a limited number of locksmiths across the country that perform this type of work, if you're area has one, then great. There's even less that do what we do, which is directly program the keys into the ECU instead of completely rewriting the EEPROM aka virginizing. EEPROM reflashing is not a prescribed remedy by Toyota/Lexus but we're not a Lexus dealer, and we have a 100% success rate so far with only a handful of ECUs ever having to come back for a second time over the 5 years we have been offering this service. We offer key programming services to these vehicles for a fraction of the cost a dealers going to charge. We're not trying to take a customer away from a local locksmith that is capable of the work, but we realize coverage across the country to handle these situations are limited.
