FIXED - i somehow when tidying up wiring put the wire lead going to Coilpack 6 to Coil Pack 4. that in turn made 3-4-1-6 fire out of turn with 2 and 5.
no wonder it sounded like it was going to explode. it runs GREAT now. had it idling for 2 hours and bled the coolant. hope to get the rest of the service going and finally get this car out of my sisters driveway

I've put about 300 miles on the car since then. no hiccups. only code is for the evap canister. pulls strong. thanks again to all the folks who helped me narrow down the issue
