1990Lex400, I would recommend the GS from personal experience. I traded my '01 GS300 for an '02 A6 4.2 and traded the Audi for another Lexus after 8 months. The reason... Audi's service sucked. Their service hours were inconvenient, it took hours even for an oil change, and they lost a replacement tire that had to be ordered from Germany when I got a flat. Parts were hard to get and expensive. Only Audi could do the oil changes and an oil filter cost $45. Their excuse was always, "well, you have a very rare car". (Guess what? If you think the A6 4.2 is rare, imagine how rare the A8 is!)

A8, A6, A4, or whatever. It will be a long time before I will consider another Audi.

Well, if it's AWD you want, may I suggest a Porsche? Killer acceleration, 4wd, all the looks and jealous necksnaps you could ever want.

I also replied to your post at the Audiworld forum as well, telling you to get the GS. One thing I did forget that the A8 has going for it is a much larger trunk, as well as folding rear sears. Going back and forth to college this could be very useful.

The trunk on the GS is one of it's weakest features, and the inability to fold down or seat, or even have a ski pass through, is ridiculous.

I'd still go with the GS though, but it is a close battle.
