O.K. bit, I agree with you on the Gasonline issue and we'll just have to disagree on the quality of Starbucks coffee but just cause they are opening 80 locations a month does not equal quality, is McDonalds burgers better than Red Robin, remember GM sells more cars than Lexus

I've been using Sunoco 94 for the last 2 years. I tried 87 and 89 couple of times, and I definately felt something was not right, but it could be just in my head but 93 and 94 octane is only a 2 cent difference. Not a big deal for me.

If you're driving a Lexus, you obviously are not a penny pincher when it comes to cars, are you? Seems like a stupid way to save money when you bought the GS at least partially for performance in the first place.

By the way, I think Clark Howard has a lot of good ideas and I've been a financial advisor for 17 years. But he views a car as the cheapest reliable way to get from point A to Point B; he isn't a "car guy".

Now his idea about not leasing cars or financing them, that makes sense-----but how many people here bought their car cash?

Me.

May sound dumb to some people, but I cashed in some stocks that had done well (this was Nov. 99 for my 2000 GS), and as it turned out, this was a brilliant move since the market nosedived after this!!!

Me too. Both the GS and the LS.

AND (getting the thread back on topic hint hint) I put premium in both of them, just like the manufacturer recommends. Like folks have mentioned, newer cars have knock sensors that retard the cars timing automatically so you can't usually tell that there is an issue. But in older cars with high compression (10.5 and 11:1 big block GM) when I put gas with lower octane in I could immediately tell the difference w/ all the pinging and detonation. Yes the technology is 30 years newer, but the basic principles of the engine are the same.
