Default 1999 GS300 Fuel gauge

So I have a question guys. My fuel gauge was working properly and I noticed that I was low on fuel you may be wondering why this is relevant and I'll explain that here in just a second. So yesterday I installed a new O2 sensor but before that I disconnected only the negative side of the battery and I believe I had it disconnected for the entire time I was removing the old one and installing the new one. So following up with why I mentioned that my fuel was low this is the reason so basically after I reconnected the battery I went to go turn it on and I noticed the low fuel light was gone and the gas gauge needle was actually reading well above the E (At the half a tank mark to be exact) and it made me believe that I had more gas and that the gauge was incorrect and ever since then my gauge has not worked correctly and it caused for my car to die due to low fuel today. I went to fill up my car and the needle didn't even move. Did I mess up the gauge when I had the battery disconnected?

Mine does that weird stuff like yours too. When mine gets to 1/4 in gauge it doesn't read accurate below that. I just fill mine up to full and watch my miles before next fill up. I'm always trying to keep my tank over 1/2 tank anyways because it's better for fuel pump being submerged in gas. I have built turbo civic with walboro pump, I never go under 1/2 in my Civic.
