Good decision.
Coolant.... it's like oil, has to be a certain standard that Lexus says is approved for the car. Lexus doesn't make their own fluids, so they buy from a manufacturer themselves.

@DMPesso ~ if the Serpentine Belt goes, do you know if there's a Warning, &/or the Engine/Car remains "affordably salvageable"? THX

The serpentine belt has nothing to do with engine operation. Just put a new belt on and you'll get your water pump, power steering, alternator, and A/C back. There is no warning besides visually inspecting it.

So you’re saying just use Lexus fluid ? Or will an aftermarket “global” antifreeze made to the same specs suffice? This is a 20 yr old car that cost $3500 bucks after all.

Pretty serious still, losing power steering... Come on, just change the belts.

Sorry if being unclear with "...has to be a certain standard that Lexus says is approved for the car.". If the codes are the same on an aftermarket one as in your user/service manual, then you're OK.

So even if there's TINY notches, & it goes, everything remains "affordably salvageable"?

Yeah. There's nothing to replace except the belt, unless it gets wrapped around another moving part and jams something up.
To be clear, I'm talking about what Lexus calls the drive belt, not the timing belt. If the timing belt lets go, your engine will eat itself.

edit: actually I did forget an important thing, which is that this belt also drives the water pump, so if it lets go, don't run the motor anymore or it will overheat, and that will not be affordably salvageable.

In my case, I have a Gold/Tan GS300 RWD, & can attest that they're built like TANKS. After several Cross Country road trips (in total talkin bout around ~15,000 miles), stopping every ~2 hours, through all southern states, PLUS north to canada & back, (hotels at night), many hot summers, freezing cold winters w lotsa snow literally burying the car, beaches, mountains, ski trips, etc, & several zinger dingers, it's still going strong after around ~133k miles, & ~21 YEARS.

Many strangers comments include "wow it's still clean", "looks like new", etc. Got both refurbished Lexus GS Starter & Driver Side Mirror (which insurance paid for coz a bad driver busted it off), a couple brake jobs of course, replaced the Front Hood Lift Supports with the BOXI brand, small body panel area cheapo patch/paint job, and some winters got it rust protection sprayed. I still have yet to change any drive or timing belts. Also have a separate set of Chrome Wheels with Dunlop Snow/Ice Winter Tires if anyone might be interested.

Plz enlighten as to other cars that comparatively afford/provide/offer literally "proven" DECADES of this combination of strong reliability + service + luxury + performance + VALUE and I'll go buy one.

KNOCK ON WOOD *KNOCK* *KNOCK* *KNOCK*
280K on my 2003 GS300 so far. Time for a tranny, and pretty much every servo in the cabin needs help, but overall quite solid.
