If anybody needs 16" rims/tires, I have a set of stock 16" rims.
Would like to do this local.
Looking to get $400 for 4 rims/tires. Tires have about $80% thread.
Let me know if you are need of them?

Remember, normally in snow, accelleration is not the problem, it is turning and stopping. Adding weight to the rear end of a car hurts both of these.
I believe adding weight to the trunk increases the traction on the rear tires. It helps the car to start rolling easier. Any car in snow will slide when stopping or turning. The technique here is to slooooooow down.

that's what i thought too, the only thing that the weight gonna hurt is the performance which u won't be needed in the snow.

That's why you put snow tires on.

Trust me, traction control with snow tires will more than make up for any extra weight you could put in the trunk. You guys are thinking 60's muscle car technology here.

Snow Tire will do the job. I had my car since 2000. I never got stuck in snow once. There is not one day I need to take a day off from work because of snow...

Hmm... Dame.. that's good for my GS... but I had no excuse not to be at work...

On GS400 I use Dunlop WinterSport M2 on stock 16s for the winter months in Chicago without any additional weight in the back. SC400 used Dunlop SP5000 (all-season) before, but I switched to Continental ContiExtremeContact (all-season). In snow GS400 is much more predictable and stable than SC400. I have to drive SC400 very slowly in snow.

Default snow tires

i live near seattle washington. we've got some very steep hills around my house. i've had rear wheel drive cars for 23 of the 30 yrs i lived here. whenever it snows much over an inch all those rear wheel drive cars got parked at the bottom of hill. then i got a 95 camry and the front wheel drive would make it up hill with up to about 4-5 inchs of snow on road. this was with the blizzak snow and ice tires. now if it was just a solid sheet of ice those blizzaks handled like it was dry road, just unbelivable traction. it hasn't snowed much the last couple winters so the feeling is that we're overdo for lots of snow. i'm going to get the blizzaks and probably going to use my 16" wheels. we do get black ice here and any traction that keeps me on road is cheaper than going off it. kinda wish i could of kept the camry for winter driving but it was one or the other and the gs400 won out.

How do you GS430/400 guys rate it on 16" wheels with standard snow tires?

Does the car feel as secure as FWD?

Thanks!

If you have never driven a car with snow tires, then you will be amazed. A RWD car with snow tires will outperform a front wheel drive car with all season tires. It will out accelerate, out brake and corner MUCH better. My wife used to have a Celica with all season tires and we would use my 325 with snows when the weather was bad.

this'll be my first winter driving in the snow..... although i have driven in boston and rural new hampshire in late december on a few isolated occassions, without incident, but in a Volvo 850 and RX300

got a GS4, but am wondering how much mileage can i expect to get out of...umm...blizzack WS-50's or an equivalent really good snow/ice tire??? how much should i expect to pay a shop to change the tires on my wheels....i have 16 inch wheels right now (99% sure on that).

i did do searches for the following questions, but really didn't come up with anything detailed enough:

besides common sense....are there any other special tips/tricks? are there any times when i SHOULD turn off the traction control to let the wheels slip a bit? any special occasions for turning off the "snow" feature???

thanks

Buy a second set of rims. Don't have your tires changed twice a year, it will cost you more than the rims in short time.

The Blizzak WS-50s turn into an all season tire when a certain percentage of their tread wears off. Check with Tirerack on what to expect in terms of mileage.

I was at Costco, and they charge $8 per tire swap on a rim. As for my experience, I have 235/45/17 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 and they will probably last around 15K miles, based on the wear rate I've been seeing. They do wear relatively fast, but they've been great on the winter roads.
