2005 HID Bulb D4S or D2R?
So I ran into a strange situation recently. I wanted to change my low bean HID headlights out on my 2005 GS430 so I consulted several sources and determined it took a D4S. I purchased some D4S Osram bulbs, installed them and to my surprise, they turned off after 30 seconds. I have heard this happening with cheap aftermarket bulbs but not with Osram. So I proceeded to take a look at the old bulbs (which work fine) and they are a D2R. The D2R is supposed to be in the 2004 GS430 not the 2005 GS430. Now I am out $150 for the bulbs b/c of course you can return them. Anyone else run into this issue with a 2005 GS430? The car was produced in 11/04 which would have been long after they stopped production on the 04 and started on the 05. I just don't get it.

All MKII GS (with HID) take D2R, from MY98-05.
In some markets the MKIII was apparently sold as a MY2005, so this overlap tends to cause confusion. I don't know why or where, but people have turned up here thinking their MKIII is a MKII because they were told it's a 2005.
You can see by the title of this forum section that 98-05 encompasses one generation (MKII) of GS.

It looks like the OP lives in ‘eMerica Probably still has a hangover from the Suber Bowl. So we should be able to help with anything that could be of help with their 2GS ‘05 GS430. 11/04 would be an expected production date for an ‘05.
Where did the D4S tip come from? That would be the appropriate place to seek compensation for burning up your $150.
A little tip I learned a long time ago, whenever doing any type of remove and replace work on a car, take a minute and compare the old part with the new one. Look for the part#s etc, but also do a back-2-back comparison and make sure they are identical in size and shape, the wire harness pins look the same, etc. Especially if it’s not an OEM part. It’s amazing how often I find parts that are supposed to fit, but they are just a little different and can cause a real headache if u don’t catch it right away. Then run into a snag later when putting everything back together. And it’s just not lining up. So you struggle for 2 days, and when your beyond frustrated, try to find the old part to see if they match. But by then the garbage man has already taken away the old part, all frustrations nobody needs.
If they don’t match up you can research it and find out which one is correct, and what needs to be done.
