Lexus Unveils All-New GS Series and Hybrid Version of its RX 330 at the North American International Auto Show

LEX-46-03

12/09/2003 Torrance, CA

Lexus will stage the world premier of its second-generation GS series luxury sport sedan at a press conference at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The all-new more powerful GS will showcase the industry's most advanced technology and offer a glimpse of a new direction in Lexus styling.

Lexus will also unveil its hybrid version of the popular RX 330 luxury SUV. The breakthrough hybrid electric-gas powertrain will add a new powerful performance dimension to the traditional hybrid advantages of high mileage and low emissions.

The reveal will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the Riverfront Ballroom in COBO Center.

Hi everyone, new to the forum. I can't wait to see the new GS. And the best part is the statemet reads "the all new MORE POWERFUL GS". I hope it has at least 330 HP. I would not expect anything more, since the new 5 has 333 I believe. Either way, this car will be a technological marvel.

I am hoping to go to my Lexus dealer next Saturday (Dec 20) for an oil check. Hopefully he will be able to show me a pic of the car or further details on engine output and I will share with you guys. He did this previously with the RX before there was any information on the net about its premiere. I hope to get some scoop.

Default 3.3 Liter is likely

Unless Toyota/Lexus has had a super secret engine project, or unless they plan on showing the car before the engine is actually available to the assembly line later this year, it is virtually certain this HAS to have the 3.3L engine if there is going to be a lower-tier level of the new GS.

I suspect the major crowd pleaser will be in the handling, new feature spec, and especially the new design. Sounds like we are going to see something quite different.

Default Engine

I don't think the GS will use the 3.3L V6 used in other Toyota/Lexus models. That engine is used solely with the Camry plattform and its derivatives (ES330, Avalon, Sienna, RX, Highlander) There were rumors earlier that they were developing a new line of V6's for RWD application, to be used in the GS, next IS, possible Supra-style sport coupe. It was rumored to be in the 3.5 to 3.6 liter size range. I think this is possible as they have a new truck V6 in the 4Runner, currently at 4.0 liters. They could modify/tune this for passenger car use perhaps? This is all just my opinion from what I've read/heard.

Make sure your digital camera is all set, and take an extra set of batteries!!! They always crap out when you need them the most.

Did anyone else notice this line?
"and offer a glimpse of a new direction in Lexus styling"

Sounds like it will be a little bit different than our current GS

Default Color?

I wonder what color GS they are going to use for the unveiling.

I hope it will be black.

Can't wait to see it! I'm also curious what the powerplant in the new GS will be. Will wait for another 3.5 weeks!

It seems every auto maker is taking styling to a new direction (ie BMW, Infinity, Acura w/ TL). Did you notice that all these new styles have to grow on you before you started to like them? "BMW 5 and 7 series, let the style grow on you..." I know when the GS400 came out a few years ago I instantly fell in love with style. I didn't hear anyone say the style will have to grow on you crap. Hopefully, the new GS won't be that type of style where you have to learn to love it.

It still hasn't grown on me and it probably never will. BMW should fire Chris Bangle and stop this madness...
