Default NAV HD Upgrade

Hey Guys! New to the forum.

Looking to upgrade the Navigation System Hard drive on my '99 GS4. I was wondering if anybody has done this and if this upgrades the User Interface (UI) or does it just update the data, roads, POIs, etc? The newer Lexus Nav system has a much nicer UI than the 2000 edition I currently have.

Appreciate your comments!

GSpeed,

I'm assuming you mean the newer system in the 2001+ GS, right? That is a totally different system based on a DVD-ROM instead of a hard drive and a bigger screen.

I'm sure it can be done, but it might be cheaper to sell your car and buy a newer one (or install an aftermarket nav) unless you're real handy with wiring.

My folks brought their 98 LS 400 into the dealership and they swapped hard drives for the NAV. They had 2 free updates since it was a CPO.

The 99 GS has a HD based Nav system in the trunk. The dealer confirmed this. In order to update it, you have to replace the entire HD. There is no DVD update.

My main question here is does the UI change after the update? The original UI is kinda ugly with lots of green. The newer NAV units have a much cleaner, mor moderning looking UI.

OK, so you're just talking about getting the new version of the software stored on the HD. Your statement about 'newer' NAV units may still be a bit confusing as you could be seeing 2001+ DVD based systems which have IMO a much cleaner UI.

In my LS400 I had it updated from the 98 to the 2002 version when I bought the car and the dealer told me the UI would be better on the new version. I only had the car for a day before the change so I didn't notice a dramatic change.... I'm sure some of the other members can chip in.

Not much of a UI change -- just some contrast differences and of course, more roads!
