Default GS400 Speedometer not working.

I have a 99 GS400 and my speedometer stops working from time to time. I reset it with the following procedure in the attached picture and it works after that but it usually takes a few attempts then stops working again about a week or two later. When the speedometer is not working my odometer stops adding miles as well. With an obd2 scan tool I can see my current speed. Any ideas on the issue? I dont have an abs or engine lights for a transmission speed sensor, if that would throw a code. I’m looking for a permanent solution. Thank you

Hello,

It sounds like one of the common issues with the instrument cluster on those cars. There are numerous different ways those reveal themselves over the years, a failing speedometer is among them. Tanin Electronix is a place highly regarded by a lot of forum members, though I haven't actually worked with them myself, try asking them what could be an issue and if they are willing to diagnose your cluster. Other than that, you can also try getting a different cluster, but it may develop the same issue over time.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

This sounds like an ABS sensor issue. That procedure is for the reset after work is complete. Are all the lights in the dash visible with the "ON" key position?

Also if you decide to get a new instrument cluster. It has to be for a GS400. The 300 will work, but won't let you rev over 4000 rpms. I'll have to dig up my post from 2014, or so. I sold my GS400 long ago.
