For the price you can't go wrong with the GS400 you're looking at.

You can take that extra 14K you save and use it to mode your GS400.

Will be A LOT more pimp'n then that stock 430 would be

Is that in Canadian dollars?
Wow........2000 GS400 for $41,000
I'll pick GS400. With $8000, you can get a nice set of JDM wheels plus a set of coilovers.

Get the 400. You can make your car look like the 430. New rear lights, plus install the new greenish tint headlights and 2001+ grille. But don't put on the 430 badge . I would say the 400 and 430 is equally fast give or take .1 or .2 sec which in real life is unnoticable. Though IMO I like the color combo of the 430 in which you wrote. You can't go wrong with black\black. E-shift makes a big difference in terms of how fun it is to drive.

Get the 400. E-Shift all the way.
Also, I remember reading that the 430 is .1 seconds slower? Probably because they couldn't use E-Shift in testing because there is none on the 430.

Also, the 400 has less mileage and is $8000 (CDN) cheaper. You can do a lot with $8000.

Despite the change in name from GS400 to GS430 which you would think would encompass a significant redesign... pretty much the only thing that was changed was a few cosmetic details, the removal of eshift, and the 'upgraded' motor.

I say 'upgraded' because really the only difference is like 15 pounds of torque. No horsepower. Oh and the engine management system is 32 bit instead of 16 bit, although I've still yet to find out how, objectively, this benefits the motor.

The GS430... some say it's a hair faster, some say it's a hair slower... realistically you probably won't notice a difference. The 15 pounds of torque are offset by about 60-70 pounds additional weight. What that weight went to, I'm not sure... maybe more sound deadening material? Does anyone know?

As far as build quality goes... I'd hate to think that Lexus made backward progress going from the 400 to the 430 (cost-cutting?). I really doubt that they did (at least intentionally anyhow).

Personally I've never driven the 430 so I can't comment, but I do know that my service advisor and everyone else at my local dealership that I've talked to has said they prefer the GS400 over the 430 marginally.

And considering that the 430 has higher milage and costs more to boot, I think you'd be nuts not to get the 400.

I'd go with the 400, the color is easier to maintain, its costs less, has less mileage. Plus 8grand is a kit (painted), coilovers, and wheels!

Off topic, since cars are so expensive in vancouver, is the mean income higher than in the US? Because a 2000 GS is probably 35k tops US (or something like that)

Well for me if I was looking to get another GS400, I would choose the last year that the 400 was made, and that is in 2000. Because they have a chance to fix all of the little bugs.
