P/S Light At Start (Current Code c1555) Power Steering
Hey Guys, after a 200km I stopped at a gas station. After refueling and staring the car the P/S Light came on with not poser steering as result.
I quilckly googled that up and did this trick:
With that, P/S light went away and I could drive another 250km withaout any issue.
However, the current issue is that the P/S Light comes on every time I cold-start the car. After I power cycle it 2-3 times, the P/S Light would eventually go away and I can drive aganin without any problems.
If I hook it up to techstream I get c1555 as current DTC, but when I power-cycle the car and the P/S Light goes away, I'm able to clear this DTC. After preforimg another helath check C15555 doesn't come back.
What I've tried so far:
- Reseat the ECU and cleaned all of the contacts from and to the rach and pinion
- Replace the ECU with a used one from Ebay and recallibrating the torque sensor: Chassis / EMPS / Utility / Torque Sensor Adjustment - callibration was successful but beahiour is the same
Again: The P/S Light comes on only when turing on the ignition mostly when the vehicle is cold. If I power-cycle it would go away and I'm able to start the car and drive around without any issue.
For me it seems, that there is some timeout happening with the power seering components not reporting back quick enough.
My assumption would be that it could be the big EPS Relay in the fuse box not closing or something else when the Ignition is being turned on:
This is what I will try to replace next, does it make sense?
What should be the next steps for me?
Edit: Totally forgot to tell, that this is a Lexus GS300 (S190L) and the engine is a V6 3GR-FSE 252PS
I know you probably don't wnat to hear it, but if you have those symptoms I've described above it's 99% the steering rack itself. In my case the boot was torn and a lot of water came in.
I've ended up bying a used one and replacing the entire thing, beacuse it was full of water inside and over time both bearings locked completely and rust was on the coils.
By entire thing I mean this one:
You can try to clean it inside. That's what I did in the first place, which gave me another month of driving until the bearings locked up. You can also try to replace those, too, but you have to be careful with taking the steering rack apart. It's made of aluminium and is easy to break.
Hi
Did you solve the problem?
Was it necessary to replace the steering gear? or steering column?
please see my answer above. In my case I had ro replace the steering rack. You have to look inside to see how severe the damage is. There are no videos in english about this. To get an idea you can watch this:

Thanks for sharing your experience! I actually had a similar issue with the steering rack. Lubricating didn't help much, probably because I did it too late due to the extremely loud noise during steering movements, audible even from outside the car. The culprit was a small hole in the rubber boot and water inside. Ended up replacing it with a used part (gs430 2005). Lesson learned: if you spot the P/S light, quickly check the steering rack and rubber boots.
