I've cruised these boards for almost three years now, but I finally decided to register and post .
With the new GS, there are some things you have consider regarding engine power. HP is nice for bragging rights, but if Lexus produces a 6AT GS430 with 300HP and 325lb-ft of torque, it's 0-60 will still likely remain well under 6 seconds. The current 430 has a 0-60 of around 5.6-5.7, but it also utilizes a 5AT. Considering that the new car will have an extra gear, that will probably shave a good half second off the 0-60 time. At the same time, it will also be a little bigger which is going to cancel out some of the performance added by the new transmission, but it still puts your 0-60 in roughly the 5.5-5.6 second range. The new GS is going to be a bit smaller than some of it's competitors like the STS, so it doesn't need as much power because it's not hauling as much of it's own weight. Also, the new 6AT will help performance but it will also help fuel efficiency, which isn't a bad thing considering where gas prices are at. We need to get an official weight of the 2006 GS430 and then we can compare it with the power to weight ratio of the 2004, and get an accurate idea of where the performance will be at. Seriously though, there's no sense in dragging it down because it only has 300HP. Many of you know how "healthy" those 300 ponies are. Think about the fact that the 2004 290HP LS430 was just .2 seconds behind the 745i in the 0-60 test in C&D's last comparison, but has 35 less horsepower. It also has the same 6spd automatic that the GS will be getting, so Lexus has likely tuned it a bit more agressively than we're guessing. Remember, the 330HP A8, 302HP S Class and 290HP Xj8 were all included in that test, and the LS shamed them all at the dragstrip. Those are all also the same engines that the GS' V-8 competitors (E500, 545i, A6 4.2, Stype 4.2) will have.
I'm betting that in the first comparison, the GS430 will retain it's dragstrip title. Even the last test I saw of the 545i 6spd manual had it's 0-60 at 5.6 seconds. A 2004 5AT GS430 can match that.
Interior and Exterior design is a subjective matter, but the new GS looks great to me. Lexus shows all of their new cars in silver, as do many other automakers and then once we see cars in dark blue and black, they're simply stunning.
I'm anxious for Lexus to show some new pictures of the GS in different colors.

Any one do not, I mean anyone do not compare this car to the 2004 Maxima. We have one in the family, and heck!, it does not have any resemblance to the new GS430 at all, except for the B pillar, which is just MINOR!!! The GS is beautiful car, and I will definetily wait to see it in person. The 2004 Maxima is a great car for my son, who loves it. Whos gonna come by you and say, eh it looks maxima- ish, not 97 percent of the people you see. You must reserve judgement till it is seen in person. I saw it at the auto show and it was not at all similar to the MAxima. I cannot wait till it comes out so I can order an AWD version.
Cheers!

The only slight similarity is the C pillar and perhaps the short decklid.
By my caculations, the new GS is 1% Maxima and 99% phenomenon.
I love the current GS, but for me the new one is 5 times better.
I think most people need to wait to see it on the road before judging.

Coming in April as a 2006, with for some stupid marketing reason, the current model as a 2005 hitting the street in September.
The first thing I heard was that this new model would be launched as a 2005 and then updated to a 2006 in April 2005, which would seem to make a lot more sense from a business model point of view.
But Fletcher Jones Lexus here in LV, says Lexus is going for a world wide launch of the model simultaneously in every market at the same time they start selling Lexus as a brand in Japan; ergo, none until April 2005.
