Engine Sound
My 98 GS300 was virtually silent at idle.
My new 06 GS300 has a ticking sound. Anyone have any opinion. Have not had a chance to bring to dealer, but the sound seems "normal", just not as quiet as the 98.

Ticking is normal but irritating
The secondary step up fuel pump is located at the back of the engine near the firewall and you can see it when you pop the hood. It steps up the fuel line pressure to 1850 PSI for the direct injection. It has a valve tap sound that gives me the shivers when I hear it. I want Lexus to silence it with a box of sound isulation or something. Sportbiker, thanks for bringing this up for the others and say Hello to Melissa for us.

Rockville - Thank you and the other members. I'm a sportbiker at heart. For me, I get in a car and go... maybe I'm getting old, but I'm taking more interest in my "cages" and less in my bikes

preview . told me normal a result of high pressure injection system. Maybe but car sounds like engine with dirty lifters. not expected of lexus.

As Rockville said. The direct injection with 1,800 PSI of fuel pressure so the car can keep up with the LEAN RUNNING ENGINE at 16:1 ( 16 part of air and one part of fuel).
Conventional engine runs at 14;1 air/fuel ratio, but the GS300 is a lot leaner, too lean that most engines will melt. The F/I( force induction) guys know all about the lean running cars...lol.
The advancetage is more HP and TQ while save on fuel economy. If you compare the 98-05 GS300 with 220 hp and fuel economy @ 18 city/25 hwy and compare it to the 06 GS300 with 245hp/230tq and fuel economy @ 21 city/27 hwy. Now, you can see the 06 with more hp, but consume less fuel compare to the nice and quiet 98-05 GS. That's the ticking noise you're talking about....spell, more power,but less gas. The ticking noise you're hearing will save your valet in the long run.
The engine designed has to be a lot stronger than the conventional engine for the car to runs 16:1 air/fuel ratio. The leaner the air/fuel means the hotter the internal will get. I know DaveGS4, TTpimp, Mr.Johnson or JaimeCBR900 can fill in for this.

My 03 GS430 had an engine tick when cold for its first year of life. It REALLY starts to get to you - especially when 1) Other GSs did not do it, and 2) Others heard it and said "how do you live with that". Too bad the others didn't work at Lexus dealerships.
The culprit was the fuel return lines rubbing up against the firewall. Basically the injector noise resonates through those babies and when they touch something it amplifies it. I'll be the new GS might have this issue.
PS - the fix was insulating the lines. Worked for one year but the sound is slowly coming back.

The only GS I test drove was a GS300 that I drove with one of my local Lexus Techs. We opened the hood and he explained to me the incredible injector PSI boost on the new V6 from about 80 PSI on a regular engine to nearly 1900 PSI on this new V6.
He also said that there is about 4 inches of foam under the center engine cover and that you can't hear youself think when it is off. The GS300 I drove was as quiet as a mouse but I didn't have it running with the hood up.
Might want to make sure the center engine cover is secure and all the foam is intact.
P.S. I just love the sound of my GS430. Drove it three days just listening to the sweet sound of the engine and exhaust before I ever turned on the ML Stereo.

Toyota, as far as I know, first introduced Direct Injection with consumer cars in Japan.
