When I test drove the RL the first thing I did was put it in manual mode to test out the paddle shifter. Keep in mind, it still uses a torque convertor so it is not a true SMG type tramsmision like BMW or F1, but I did notice that it is much improved over your typical manumatic transmission. While it still isn't as fast as true SMG, it appeared to shift fastter/tigher, and a little better than other manumatic transmissions.

The paddle shifters behind the wheel is F1 inspired. This is where it supposed to be and not on the shifter. The idea is to be able to shift a manual car (SMG) without taking your hands off the steering wheel. The push button on the previous GS was okay but just a different application. It appears everyone is starting to go more traditional F1 style like Ferrari, Laborghini, BMW and others have have true SMG type transmissions. The ne IS250 and IS350 will also get paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

In this case this puts a big damper on the paddle shifter in the IS350. I really hope Lexus puts the MMT/SMT transmission on the IS350 as well.
I agree. Being a regular auto with paddle shifters, the shifts won't be as quick.

Lexus has admitted they made a typo in their PR.

So NO SMT/MMT whatsoever for the new IS for now.

That is even worse news. Now, I probably would get the IS350 even with the manumatic auto, but it would have been that much better if it had the MMT Judging by the speculated performance numbers from Lexus on the IS250, it really needed a good transmission with good gearing. It kind of makes sense now why they claimed upper 7 second range 0-60 for ther IS250. It probably was true automatic numbers.

PS. Now that I read the correction closely, it appears the IS250 will get a traditional clutch manual. This is good news, but still leaves me wondering why the slow 0-60? Anyway, I still hope they offer a MMT because I like the manual, but my wife needs to drive it as well on occation (Well, if I get the car) and she needs the automatic. Oh well, I guess we just have to wait until the actual release.

I think it's because, for $6K less than the GS they evaluated, you get a fully-loaded, identical horsepower (albeit lower torque), AWD car.

545i and E500 would have placed much, much higher in this comparison. I own 545i and GS400 and the 545i runs laps against my lexus. And even the 2006 Gs430. This is the worst comparison test I've seen by C/D in a long time.
IMO the RL should NOT have been in this comparison at all. How ever when they do C/D comparison of all V6 AWD performance luxury sedans, it's very possible it will place on top or at least top 2. I used to work for Infiniti and now Lexus, but the BMW is the ultimate DRIVING machine. This C/D comparo is terrible!
