The Lord of the Rings!!
How can anyone not even bring up The Lord of the Rings series when EVERY episode of the series has either been nominated for and, in most cases, won the sound, music and visual effect Oscar awards, for three years in a row?
What else could be more perfect than that for showing off the ML system, especially with the numerous thundering battle scenes and beautiful landscape overviews?
Sound, music and visual-related awards include:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, 2001 (74th Oscar)
Won:
MUSIC (Original Score) -- Howard Shore
VISUAL EFFECTS -- Jim Rygiel, Randall William Cook, Richard Taylor, Mark Stetson
Nominated:
MUSIC (Original Song) -- "May It Be," Music and Lyric by Enya, Nicky Ryan and Roma Ryan
SOUND -- Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Gethin Creagh, Hammond Peek
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, 2002 (75th Oscar)
Won:
SOUND EDITING -- Ethan Van der Ryn, Michael Hopkins
VISUAL EFFECTS -- Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randall William Cook, Alex Funke
Nominated:
SOUND -- Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Michael Hedges, Hammond Peek
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, 2003 (76th Oscar)
Won:
MUSIC (Original Score) -- Howard Shore
MUSIC (Original Song) -- "Into the West," Music and Lyric by Fran Walsh and Howard Shore and Annie Lennox
SOUND MIXING -- Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Michael Hedges and Hammond Peek
VISUAL EFFECTS -- Jim Rygiel, Joe Letteri, Randall William Cook and Alex Funke
My favorite scene for showing of a system is in The Two Towers when all the ogres start stomping on the ground with their spikes before the fort. The deep bass from the stomping on the ground, the imaging of the overwhelming hordes and the spectacular scene overall are just so awesome, it'll blow anybody's pants off with a good enough sound system.

wow this is fun
yeah, i agree with elizabeth. i talked to her yesterday and we were looking for movies with good starting audio. i mean, when you sell a car, you won't tell the guy to wait 3 mins so you can fast forward to certain position on the dvd
i wonder if there is anyway we can get those dvd they use at best buy or so to show off audio setup?

Lots of discussions like this on home theater forums...
Click here for a LONG discussion on AVSForum with a lot of ideas.
When I show off my HT, I have a DTS Demo DVD that I obtained from a dealer buddy of mine (you can find them on ebay) that has cool snippets from 5 movies or so... Gladiator initial battle scene, depth charge from U-571, a piece from an animated movie whose title I can't remember (space scene with big ice crystal asteroids), some DVD music concert, Chicken Run snippet I think. I also have a similar THX demo DVD.
Soimething like these:

I can't recall if the new GS has DTS decoding... if it doesn't look for the THX ones to do 5.1 instead

Liz, If I were you I'd get one (or a couple) of these to put in. It gives your customers a chance to choose from a bunch of movies and /or music DVD performances. Make sure you get 'the real thing' not a burned DVD-R copy...

WOW. Thanks Dave!
I never would have thought these existed. I think I'm going to get the one with 18 movie clips. Gladiator, Chicken Run, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, and even Peter Frampton. Awesome!
