Merged 3GS Fuel Threads - Is it OK to use REGULAR gas Instead of PREMIUM?
#167
In order to achieve the best performance the knock sensor allows the engine to run with the ignition timing as far advanced as possible. The computer will continue to advance the timing until the knock sensor detects pinging. So the knock sensor works on premium fuel exactly as it works with regular.
Under the condition of generating max engine efficiency, knock sensor DOES NOT work the same as it does lower grade gasoline.

engine efficiency peaks out at one point of specific condition. continuing advancing ignition time doesn't mean continuous engine efficiency increase, which mean ECU will not "continue to advance the timing until the knock sensor detects pinging".

think we are debating engine performance on premium vs regular here.
ok. the mindset is, unless someone tells me running on regular is guaranteed 100% risk free for 100K miles, I will keeping using premium to protect my 50G property.
for those who use regular and trust modern engine technology of anti-knocking, here is the description of what anti-knock device does for your engine:
"An anti-knock device selectively retards and advances ignition timing based on the detected knocking of the engine, the engine speed and throttle position. This anti-knock device operates to suppress engine knock and reduce hunting, without producing an unexpected and sudden change in engine output and speed."
so it "detects" and then "suppresses" knocks. oh thanks but no thanks. I will use premium to relieve you from duty.

When newspapers and magazines tell you that premium is waste of money, they are refering to cars that use regular gas and cars that recommands premium not cars that requires it like the GS. try putting regular in a turbo charged or super charge engine and see what happens.

Doesn't really help to pinch pennies on something that was engineered and optimized to be used with premium unleaded fuel. Lexus didn't spend millions of dollars to put that sticker on the inside of your fuel door for nothing.

^^ exactly, again, why do people have to argue otherwise when "premium required" is labeled clearly, don't you think Lexus would rather put "87 OCTANE TOTALLY OK" instead to make it more appealing to the market? It's there for a reason and stick with it.

If premium is too expensive for some, maybe a Honda or Toyota would have been a better choice.
I bought a Lexus and use Premium.
The wife's car is a lease so we use 89.
Shell in my choice of gas company.
