Merged 3GS Fuel Threads - Is it OK to use REGULAR gas Instead of PREMIUM?

How much different in mpg?
I never put premium and don't want to start. I don't feel any vibration. And here the diff is 20cents. Just trying to see if it's worth it since I don't "race". I hardly even touch the SPORT.

I've been running premium in my '07 GS350 AWD since I bought it a few weeks ago. I just checked the mpg and it said the tank avg was 13mpg?Does this sound right? My wife drives the car back and forth to work each day which is about 8 miles round trip. All other driving is done in the city, no highway at all.

Use premium, that's what the engine is tuned to use. It's all about the right fuel for the compression ratio.
Even if you put lower octane fuel, the computer will do things like retard timing and likely add more fuel per cycle and run less efficiently but it will run "fine" unless something is horribly wrong or the fuel is worse than can be adjusted for. Correct me if I'm wrong but you would never get knocking from putting a lower than rated octane fuel in, it actually sets up the conditions for a pinging situation.
Pinging is when the fuel "pre-ignites". High octane fuel burns more slowly, hence, why it is needed for a high compression engine. When a gas is compressed, it heats up, sometimes so much so that it can ignite before the spark. In fact, this is how diesel engines work.
Knocking is when the fuel does not burn fast enough.
Anyway, really... if buying premium gas is breaking someones budget I wonder why they would buy a car like this in the first place.
