Default Trunk Bracket Caulk/Adhesive

Yesterday I was cleaning the underside of the trunk lid. While looking at where the brackets are attached to the left and right side of the lid, I noticed adhesive or caulk surrounding the bracket. Attached is a picture of the bracket with the yellowing caulk.

The caulk doesn't look great, and it appears to be yellowing. But my main concern is that the caulk/adhesive doesn't feel like its cured. If I take a small cloth to it, it will wipe off almost like a heavy grease, and its sticky. If you look closely at the picture you'll see where I touched it with my finger in several places. The left bracket is similar, but not as yellow.

Are your GS's brackets like this? Thanks.

Dave

Dave, mine looks just like yours and is sticky but it hasn't yellowed. It's more black like it's been spray painted. But, my car is black where yours is Mercury Metallic isn't it?

Thanks Bigzip. Yes, my GS is Mercury Metallic. I guess they use different color sealants depending on the paint color. I think it's very strange that this material isn't more hardened. It's going to attract dirt and you can't wipe it off. The caulking on my left bracket looks more like clear and the right is slightly yellowed.

It's more of a thick, greasy silicone lubricant than caulk. I was able to rub it off, but it's a messy job.

jwaters, yes, it's like a silcon grease. I'm sure Lexus has a reason for why it's there, so I'm not taking it off. I plan to ask my dealer about it when I have the oil changed.

a lot of car makers put these into the creveses and they end up oozing out over a period of time. I dont know why they put it there...possibly to help w/ sound deadening.
