Default Delayed Downshifts

I've said in my past review https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=154780 how much I like the smoothness and versatility of the transmission in my GS430.

But I've noticed recently that when traveling between 35-40mph and attempting to downshift (automatically by applying gas pedal pressure), there's a delay in shifting. Almost as if the tranny is undecided. Similar to the RX330 issue that's been plagueing owners, but not quite as slow as the 330.

Anyone else notice this?

my complaint, if you can call it that, is that there's a hesitation when manually down shifting. I'm sure it's all designed around ensuring a smooth shift, reduced emissions, etc. but I'd prefer a more agressive shift when using in the manual mode. As I recall, there was another thread on this subject.

Are you in Sport or Normal?

But yes I do experience it, more pronounced in Normal.

Normal, but I do see it in Power too. Not certain if it varies and if so, whether it is response time, or speed

I didn't notice it until a few thousand miles on the vehicle.

Try this. Steady your speed to 35 mph. Apply 35-45% throttle. See if there is a delay in shifting.

I now have 6k miles, did as you said with no abnoraml results. Shifts as smooth as the day I bought her.

This is exactly what mine does.

i've gotten accustomed to it and actually think ahead and time it so that it'll kick down when i need it.

At first I had thought it was by defeat switch for the Nav, being on quite a bit, but now I'm not so sure.

I think this issue is specific to the 300s. I took my 430 in for its 5K oil service and they gave me a loaner which happened to be an AWD 300. The delay was the first thing I noticed when I drove it a little hard and I immediatly thought about this post. Damn thing stays in gear for what seems like forever at a higher RPM and doesn’t seem to want to shift down, my 430 just doesn't do this at all. I have never experienced this until I drove the new 300. Maybe is more prevalent on the AWDs but it really stood out too me. I can see how that would be frustrating.

I love the AWD control though, it really seemed to grab through the corners.

I have a 430 and notice it just as I've described. It's not that it holds High RPM's for a while, that would be Upshifting. You might be getting the two reversed.

Depressing the throttle to achieve a higher gear is downshifting. I looked it up because I sometimes get the two confused. This link doesn't explain upshifting as well as it does downshifting.

??????
Whether it is up shifting or down shifting the question was were we experiencing any delays at any speeds shifting gears. The delays I was experiencing were for both up and down shifting. I was just trying to make a note because I noticed it way more on the 300. Basically it is like this, the car is controlled by computers and yes there are delays because of them, only reprogramming will change this. I just thought we were looking for something more abnormal or something. I personally miss the gauge shifting of the 2nd gen GS, I could go through the gears much harder and quicker. The computers on the 3GS "IMO" are way over controlling. Don't get me wrong I still love the car too death but I have an aggressive side that needs to be satisfied. Because of this I will be doing upgrades "or should I say Downgrades."

Well actually no. I asked the question (it's my thread) very specifically about downshifting. The upshifting delays are absolutely normal.

The GS transmission will purposely hold a gear if you accelerate hard and then let go of the throttle quickly. It does this to hold you back because it figures you might have a car in front of you. I very much like this feature and it is better illustrated when ECT is set to power.

The delayed downshifts are a fundamental tuning issue and I agree software updates could easily fix this.
