The GS 400/430 always had 10 more hp than the LS 430. The GS "WAS" the bad boy Lexus but with 342 hp, the IS 350 is looking really good.

Wow, this would be a tremendous buzzkill.
I've driven the LS460 and was expecting more from the GS. No wonder
Lexus does not seem excited by this product. It will probably not
sell with these specs...

340hp is not enough to bring the faithful back into the fold. Why produce two different motors and or/ecu's? Heck by the time this engine is out everyone else will be over 380hp. Again, 340hp is good on paper and with that new trans (or will the GS get screwed with that as well) it should pick up fine and be more than enough power for most but many will still wait on the sidelines (or the Infinity dealer) and scratch their head at Lexus headquarters.

As for the GS having "only" 342hp.....if true, what a disappointment. It would still probably be faster than a GS450h, because it'd have the same hp and presumably be lighter, but it'd still make no sense whatsoever. Not to mention the competition would pass them like a grade 1 exam. Whatever happened to staying ahead of the game?

At this rate, I might as well either keep my current 2nd Gen or get a nice used 3rd Gen 06-07 for under 40k. And use the additional monies for mods. A drop and wheels. For me to consider buying a 08 it will have to be a 0-60 low 5's/high 13's 1/4. that's a lot of money to be outran by your little IS brother, Chevy Impala SS and BMW 535i. I'm just saying....

Yeah, 342..... not happy. I've been holding out for a long time already for a new car. Seems like the new GS will not be in the stable. I've looked at 545/550's and M45 but wanted to keep it Lexus. I hope the engineers stumble and spill at least another 20 horses all over the car or I'm jumpin' ship.

I still don't buy it.
There is some interesting info some of you may want to know with how Toyota/Lexus does things. Before the new Tundra officially came out, there were training sessions done with prototype trucks for Toyota employees. Several people from training sessions had all posted the same thing on another website saying there were window stickers on the prototypes that said the 5.7L would have 330 - 350HP. Different training sessions gave different numbers in that range. A lot of people were dissapointed, but a clever few knew those numbers were a lie and that was simply to throw off the competition. As we all know, those numbers did turn out to be a lie.
We have heard a whole bunch of rumours about the GS460. Early rumours said it would have 380HP, then some rumours said it would have 380-390HP, then some mentioned 400+HP and now the latest rumour is 342HP. 342HP absolutely does not make sense because it's way too close to the power rating of the GS450h and the GS460 would cannibalize GS hybrid sales to an extent with such similar power ratings. It would also be a waste of time and resources releasing the GS460 with only 342HP as many competitors have more power. If the number is true, then we will discuss what a dissapointment it is.
Until then, I still stand by the idea that the "342" number is bogus and certain Lexus reps and employees are being given bogus info to throw off the competition.

IF it does indeed have 342 hp, then it will more than likely still be faster than the GS450h. Dont forget that the 460 will probably weigh a good 400lbs less than the 450h and wont feel as heavy taking turns.
The GS is probably the lightest car in its class. The E, 5, A6, and M all weigh in around 4,000lbs while the GS430 around 3,700 (GS450h - 4,100 lbs).

I still hope somehow both MT and C&D got the wrong info as 342hp would indeed be very disappointing given the difference between the GS460 and the LS460 and the fact that the GS is supposed to be the top line sports sedan in the Lexus lineup. As 1SICKLEX stated, if the 342hp turns out to be true, the IS350 with 306hp just becomes so much more interesting in light of the likely $20,000 or so price difference for only 36hp.
