I hope someone in Japan who has shopped for a GS there can reply in this thread & give their opinions since they can test drive the GS350 & GS430 back to back over there since both is offered there right now.

the 430 has more tq, but man having driven the is350, the 430 has no chance against it. my only question is from freeway speed (60-120mph), i am not sure which one is faster, the 350 or the 430. again no one can answer that yet i guess that's probably what i care more about as well

Henry, I'm sure the engine has an aluminum block which should be lighter than the old cast iron. It also makes boosting the motor dangerous when adding an aluminum block plus high compression. That high compression sure makes the car so much fun to drive. Not an once of delay from the throttle. Depending on the price of the GS450, I might settle for the GS350.

If the cars weighed the same, the old 430 should have the edge in performance and low end grunt, cause the torque rules. In the end, the 350 is still the favored powerplant for the future. The power they are achieving out of a smaller engine displacement is impressive.
I will sadly miss the V8 rumble though. The v6 will never sound as good as the v8.

Again, put the 350 in almost the same weight of vehicle (GS body style) and I think the old 430 might still have the edge.

like i said the question should be 60-120, that's supposedly where the v8 should shine, but we have to see since the is350 has amazing 1/4 mile as well

Lexus Test Driver
I've driven the GS430 and GS450h back to back...
on a closed course and the GS450h will draw away from the GS430 off the line but then they stabilize and stay about the same pace. I would not expect the GS350 to have that kind of jump. In upper speed driving and gear downs the GS350 should hold its own due to its horsepower. The GS430 doesn't have the new engine tech and is a remnant of the 4.0 however it sure has been bulletproof and was exciting back in the day (1998) when something wicked this way comes.....It's been a great powerplant but innovations will retire it to pasture soon. The amazing change is by merely adding .3 liter displacement you get about 100 HP with direct injection and dual variable valve timing.
The GS350 should be a sweet spot car that offers excellent performance, sound fuel efficiency and almost nil emissions. My question still remains.....why didn't Lexus put it out at the beginning of the new GS series? The two most often heard excuses are that the 350 engine was still being tamed and developed or that it would make the V8 look bad to have less horsepower. I'm in the camp that says the GS430 will still handle its little brother but not by too much. The IS350 is rated a 10th of a second better 0-60 than the GS430. The most pressing need for the 3.5 is in the AWD version of the GS. This will give the throttle response that increases the fun factor and have the traction of AWD in the Northern climates. Since the IS350 is not available in an AWD this will give more incentive to opt for the GS. I wasn't aware that the GS430 would not get the gen. 5 nav either. That will kill the car and make it a lame duck. It has already gone into Special Order only status. Since the engine technology you buy in the GS350 will be leading edge and it will come in under the GS430's trailing edge then it will constitute better value. VDIM is the the GS430's last trump card but most people don't understand this innovation and the automotive press universally decries it so let them eat cake! I still like the OEM GS430's 18" 5 spokes and the awesome beefy brakes. Did I mention the sound????

well, the gs430 put down around 230hp at wheels. the is350 we know puts down 250hp, that's quite a bit more. the weight difference on the gs and is are actually not THAT significant. the gs430 does 0-60 in high 5. the is350 does 0-60 in low 5 any day. put that setup on the gs350 and i think it can do mid 5 easy. so 0-60 the gs350 is gone.

SOrry Henry i thought the 430 you were referring to was the newer model... I guess i worded the question wrong..
I was saying i can't believe the the V6 GS350 is pushing 300HP.. That's a big jump from the 245 in the 06 model.. Maybe now consumers will opt for the v6 instead of the V8 which is producing about the same numbers as the V8.. and the GS350 will be more affordable than the 430?
What is the 450 going to have HP wise?

We should have another poll: "How long are you willing to wait for a GS 460." It seems to me that by the time the 460 makes it to dealers, a refresh will be right around the corner - might as well wait for that too.
