Red face 18" Wheels -VS- 19" Wheels

Greetings all...

I'm new to this so please bare with me. I'm in the market for some rims and narrowed it down to Dub Dirty Dog 5, but I can't decide what size wheel. I love the ride of my GS, but I don't want to compromise looks over a ride. I've been told that I need 35 series tires if I go 19", but I want 40 series... I guess they think it may rub... I can go 18" with 40 series, but what's the point. I want a classy look, not a baller look. Can anyone please give me some advise... Also will I need to make any modifications to my brakes since these wheels may be heavier? Thanks for your time...

35 series vs. 40 series has less effect on your tire rubbing your fender or wheel well than other things like offset and tire width. They're recommending 35 series on the 19" to match the stock tire's diameter so that it won't affect things like your speedometer.

I have no idea what "Dub Dirty Dog 5" rims look like, but if you choose to go with the smaller 18" wheel, choose a design w/o a lip and that has spokes going right to the edge of the wheel. This will make the rim look bigger. For example, the stock GS430 18" rims look fairly big for an 18" wheel. If you choose a wheel w/ a deep dish lip, I would recommend going at least 19" or else the rim will look even smaller than stock.

As for brake modifications, they're not really necessary. In fact, the vast majority of people who upgrade their rims/tires never change anything in the brake system and, though they may not admit it, many who do upgrade their brakes do it more for the look rather than the overall performance.

Heavier wheels/tires not only can affect things like brakes, but it will slow your car down, place greater stress on your suspension components and cause premature wear on your shocks and various other suspension components.

If you go to 19" rims, you will definitely need to lower your car or the combination of the lower profile tire on the larger rim will make your car look much higher than it is.

Whatever you choose, buy something that has good quality. I've bought many sets of high quality rims in the past and 1 set of cheap rims. Guess what? The only rims that I have ever cracked were the cheap ones.

OK. I googled Dub Dirty Dog 5. Rims actually look pretty good and tasteful for having such a ghetto fabulous sounding name. Since they have a big lip, I would definitely say go with 19s.

LOL! Everybody else here will be Googling that name, too. Fortunately, the wheels look nothing like the name would suggest - they are actually a pretty good look for the GS.

Thanks AlterZgo your reply was very helpful... I'm on my way out to check out these wheels. I would really like to get the 19" rims, but the whole lowering thing has got me worried. I understand the gap inside the wheel well, but I'd rather not mess with the suspension at all. I know the ride will be much harder on a 35 series tire. I will have these guys put the 18" & 19" rims on with the appropriate tire and give it a test drive... Let's see what happens. Thanks again, and have a GREAT day.
