your local dealer can provide you with invoice pricing as well. the thing is, just cause i can provide my customer with invoice pricing, doesnt necessarily have any bearing on what i will sell the car for. i think dealers are stupid for trying to NOT give invoice info to a customer. you can find invoice anywhere. by trying to "hide" invoice from a customer the dealer just looks stupid.

You know what looks stupid? When dealer trying to tell you that Invoice price is how much "THEY" paid for it. I will never believe this even for a second. I think, invoice was "invented" for a purpose of negotiation where they usually start with MSRP vs Invoice and trying to work their way somewhere in the middle. At the end of the month or to match other offers, they can come down closer to invoice price, but always give you this line "We can not just give it away to you at the price we paid. We have to make at least $500 or $1,000 on it".
BTW, my dealer (Ray Catena) was very open upfront with me about invoice price. I had a different case of price negotiation because I was coming off a Corporate Lexus buyback of my lemon ES350 (two faulty trannys). So, to make things right and to keep me as a customer instead of me taking money and going somewhere else, I ended up getting my GS350 AWD about $700 below invoice price. That is an example of dealership integrity and customer satisfaction you can't find anywhere else!!!

invoice IS what the dealer pays for the vehicle. when i floorplan a unit, its for the invoice amount. holdback isnt received until the unit is reported as sold. its not like a big secret anyways, not a big deal. everyone knows about holdback.

Actually, I think the majority of the purchasing public do not know about holdback and thats good for dealers. Just the informed customers know about it, I have know alot of people who hold bachelor's degrees and think invoice is the cost to the dealership so thats one thing that struck me as interesting. No offense but I bet a higher proportion of Lexus customers are informed than say KIA customers.
JJbodean: does holdback apply to units that are custom ordered as well?

Theoretically, this is what a vehicle truly costs a dealer:
2007 GS350 Base RWD 4-Dr Sedan V6
MSRP $44,150
Destination $695
Total Sticker Price (MSRP+Destination) $44,845
Invoice $38,851
Holdback (2% of BASE MSRP) $883
Cost to Dealer ($38,851-$883+$695) $38,663
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that you are not likely to get this price as this does not include a dealers overhead (salesmen commission, insurance, lights, etc.)

i think if you looked at the demographics of the buyers the typical lexus buyer is far and away more educated, mature, and savvy than the typical kia buyer, so yes, i would say that is an accurate statement to make

its close. freight is now $715. there are also factory advertising fees that are added to the invoice amounts that are commonly found on the internet, depends on where the dealer is located.
