I don't know if it applies to the GS, but no question, in my opinion, Lexus has problems with setting valve clearances on the ES350 or they would not run the spectrum of reasonably viewed as quiet at idle to sewing machine level lifter noise, all the way to cannery works volume as evidenced by poll of problems with...on ES350 forum.
If you are told direct injection is the cause, ask to be shown the exact location of the pump that is claimed to be the source of this noise, and then for no more than 2 minutes of running, cover it with insulation material and see if it is that.

Bob, ES vs GS problem is different. With ES not everybody have that noise, and its indeed a problem. With GS, this behavior consistent with all GS300/350. I have no problem with this. The main purpose of me starting this thread was to find out if I have an isolated case with the engine noise or if its a common design feature/flow. I got my answer and happy now For those who find this not acceptable, they probably should get GS450h or look into LS460.

You were not mentioning valve ticking, a few others were though and that is why I posted that. A loud idle could be just that, a loud idle.

It's perfectly normal and caused by direct injection. It has noting to do with the valves and is actually the sound of the injectors firing.

hmmmm lets see...mine ticks (normal) but I can't hear it when I'm inside the car nor when I floor it in a 300+ horsepower v6....0-60 in 5.9 seconds I'll take the noise! Worth the trade off to me!

jabbar...

Some people this noise does not bother, or they accept it in the car and the explanation for it. Others it grates on them as rattles and squeeks do for some. Some are not as bothered by rattles and squeeks as others and it seems some are quite comfortable with engine noise. It is a personal decision based on your tolerance level as to what to do or not do about it. The only place to find out for sure if it can be toned down somewhat as to volume is your dealer service center or another close by you maybe.

I have a 2006 GS300 AWD.
My car does the same and it bugs me especially in the drive through!
I have taken it to lexus and they say it is normal but I don't like it makes me think that something is going to break. It is a ticking sound and I wonder if others think "what is going on with that lexus"? I'll just deal with it for now cuz I'm just waiting for the LS460 to be out for a year and pick one of those up.

Me too. I guess that's why I'm never really bothered by rattles and such. Rarely is the music off in my car.

The ticking noise doesn't really bother me at all. You can't hear it while moving so not a big deal. If it bothers you that much while you're parked, just turn off the engine!
