Released from Detroit aout show:
Ellen again. Just got back from the Lexus launch - two new performance cars in the prestigious "F" class. F (for flagship) was the code name for the original Lexus that became the LS.
The first car revealed was the LF-A super car concept. This version is more exotic than the one launched at the 2005 NAIAS show. It's got a 500 hp V10 engine, which makes 200 MPH not only possible, but probable. And Lexus said it has "an exhaust note" you'd expect from a performance car. They didn't play that tune in the ballroom though. The Lexus exec admitted that this car is very close to the vehicle they'll eventually bring to market.
Then, they showed us the IS-F. This car was designed by a group of "rogue" engineers at Lexus who didn't have to conform to the corporate development program. The Lexus exec explained that this car is designed to "haul a**" - and boy did it ever haul you-know-what onto the stage! I couldn't even catch it on video.
It's got the first ever 8-speed sport shift transmission and a 400 hp engine that will do 0-60 in less than 4.9 sec. Yeah, we'd say that car does exactly what that exec says it was designed to do.
