I just read that consumber reports in the April Issue now ranks Lexus Reliability down to 5th place and blames it on one model the GS - Ouch!! - Just got mine last month after my flawless 1999 GS!!
Body integrity rattles, lock mechanisms and sound system were the bad areas.

i'm on my 3rd GS since 1998. my first was the 98 GS400. the second was an 01 GS430, and now we are on to the 06 GS430. in another 12 months we are looking at either the GS 460 or 450h.
i will say that after participating on CL for quite some time, i have noticed a decline in quality over the years. the cars still run great (i.e., no electrical or mechanical problems whatsoever), but the fit and finish are no longer what they once were.
i think with the 06 GS, the L-finesse thing took over and they over-engineered a lot of things that just don't need that much scrutiny. for instance, the "flush-mount" center stack, instead of the molded/rounded edges present in the 2GS and other models. i can see that the flush mount might be "new age", but for god's sake, if it isn't aligned properly, then don't do it, because it looks like *****.
and the center console thingy - why did they change the design on that? the old one was perfectly fine and served it's purpose well, with one button to open the top, one button to open the bottom. the new design and material of the center console failed and caused squeaks and eventually was replaced on mine. (by the way, have any of you seen the new ES center console thing - that thing is retarded!)
and finally, the sunroof "webbing". well i don't know why they changed the sunroof design, but now all the models use this webbing. and now my webbing has completely dislocated from the glass roof, so i have to call to get that fixed. god knows that will be an all day repair.
if there's one thing they should learn - IF IT AINT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!
we still love the GS and consider these to be very minor problems. my relatives have BMWs and MBs that are plagued with all sorts of problems that potentially leave you stranded. that to me is just unacceptable.
i will say that my new venture into the Audi world has been a pleasant change so far. my little A4 is a hoot and a feels like a tank. uneven road surfaces and small bumps don't bother it at all.
