Poll: What brand of gas do you use? (and why)
#16
Yup. I have heard exactly what eyekutr said. I know someone who works at a refinery. He said all of the major companies all share tanks that they use to store excess supply. The only difference is the additives.

My mom works at Port Everglades where all the gas comes in. Trucks from different companies come to load up and move it out. She says all gas starts the same but different companies have different formulas for their additive. The smaller/cheaper companies do less or no additives.
This means the answer is yes and no...one of those rarities. All gas is the same until the individual company puts in additives to thier premium gasses.

I don't doubt any of these posts. Years ago, there was a difference in gasolines sold by different companies. Octane was one factor and additives another. A car would run differently on one gas and still differently on another gasoline.
Then, government stepped in.
Today, as many have said, trucks emblazoned with logos for all of the gasoline companies load at a main distribution point. This fact became quite evident to us in Arizona when a pipe line carrying gasoline into the state was ruptured. The result was that EVERY gas station, regardless of affiliation, ran out of gas.
I find it interesting to note that every car mfg manual that I have read says to not add any gasoline additive to your tank. It is a waste of money.
So is chasing down a favorite gas station because of the belief that it sells a better gasoline than another.

All I know is it set me back $ 59.00 this evening to pump in 16 gallons of Valero's finest.
TO the question:
I like Valero, which is a a rebrand of the now defunct Diamond Shamrock.

Costco gas used to be significantly cheaper - about 10% below market - when gas prices were in the $1-$1.50 range. Nowadays the local Costco sells gas for no more than 10 cents below the best local prices, sometimes higher than even the average prices. With gas at $3 a gallon, the savings have evaporated. I get much higher benefit by going to a local gas station with an average price and charging gas to my AT&T Universal MasterCard that returns 5% rebate on gas (can't use MasterCard at Costco).
