Thanks for that nugget of wisdom...what i really am wondering is there a read out of avg fuel economy where the time variable can be reset at any time. so if i am on the highway i can reset before i get on it or for that matter anywhere.

on my '07 it's in the drop down panel to the left of the steering wheel. that's where I reset it. also for mpg, you see how many miles you have on your trip odometer and divide that by the number of gallons you just got to fill your tank up.

I have the same situation. Traded my ES350 for a GS yesterday and have been trying to just reset without filling up and have not figured a way yet. the reset in the drop down does not seem to do it for me and the nav screen just resets the miles and ave. speed. ES had a extra mpg ave in addition to the tank one you could reset by just holding in the disp for a few seconds. If anyone has a work around it would be appreciated. If you want to see how you do on a trip of a hundred miles or so you have to fill up first. I even tried taking off the opening the tank lid and opening the gas cap. Somehow the car knows when you refill it. I figured just open the gas cap and that would do it. That said, the GS is a great car. Cannot believe the difference. Love it.

the current/avg mpg reading for me seems to reset after not driving the car for a period of time. It resets by default after a few hours. My Mercedes used to do that after 4hrs of being parked and not having the engine/ignition on.

Newer Mercedes have 2 separate pages of trip data. One is "After Start" and shows elapsed time, mpg, mph, distance etc. and one is "After Reset" which shows the same info. The "After Start" page is the one that automatically resets. Both can be manually reset using the "R" button on the dash. There is also a separate distance to empty page.
The GS does not have anything like the MB system. It is "Tank Avg" only and can not be manually reset. I believe I saw a post from some GS450h owners that said they had a manual reset through the nav screen but we don't have that feature on the GS350.

I've found that the mpg computed by car is consistently higher than what I compute from the trip odometer and the gas pumped into the car. Doesn't matter what station I buy at, the computer's mpg is always higher. I know that the speedometer reads somewhere around 3% slow (e.g., indicated 65 is around 62 or 63 mph), so I'm guessing that maybe the odometer is off as well -- meaning it shows fewer miles than actually driven, making the mpg lower. Can't figure out why else this would be.

it is odd the the ES has two AVE MPG. One like the GS and another you can reset any time. That is the only thing I have found the I like better on the ES however. I can live with it but it is a strange oversite.

Have a 2006 GS300 with AWD, it is true, the trip computer mileage is in error, however, the error is consistent and equals 1.5 mpg less than acutally shown. Sad thing, my friend has a toyota Avalon also 2006, and its purported gas mileage is right on the money, too bad it is not as convenient to read as on the GS.
Actually the trip computer is a distraction from driving enjoyment, so I just let the average mpg per tankful display on the small screen right under the speedometer, by flicking the steering wheel button 'display" you can also indicate the range left, the temperature outside, etc...
