dumb question on my part, but just to make sure...
you're saying the tank was full, you drove 260 miles, THEN it took 17 gallons to fill up, right?
Not, you filled 17 gallons, then drove 260 miles and the needle was near empty....
it does seem low if you can get 12 to 15 miles of non-stop driving. but if it's a back country road, why are you going only 30 mph?
I may be reading your posts wrong...

I have the same commute as you, 5 miles to work and back. I average about 16 MPG. Short trip takes a big toll on gas mileage especially if you take short trips and the car dont have enough time to warm up. Try pumping the tires up to 35 psi and dont warm up the car as much. Just drive off after a min or so and take it easy until the car is warm up. BTW, I had a 98 Jeep grand cherokee and driving the same commute, I was getting 11 mpg.

Its weird because its all street driving but flowing at a easy 30mph rate. Im at 980miles on the odo now. I warm up the car for a minute or so then im off. Im going to check the tire pressure tonight. With the price of gas, its more economical for me to drive the Jeep with 87 oct andsave $$$ and sacrifice the lexus confort on the commute.
I was thinking of installing a Wideband O2 sensor on my GS350 to see what the cold start enrichment is like and monitor the A/F ratio on the drive backand forth. Maybe the car is just tuned to be very rich, but I dont see any excessive smoke or exhaust.

Thats the problem, our car runs very rich when its not warm up. By the time its warm up and running at peak efficiency and peak emission perforamnce, we are already at work and the cycle starts over and over again. On the Cherokee, they its not a ULEV, so the computer program will not try to warm up the car as fast as poosible.

I have a long commute to work (45 mile Highway and 7 mile city) and I drive pretty aggressive when Im not stuck in traffic. I average 24-26 mpg per tank.
5k miles in 2.5 months.

I drive 18 miles, of which 2 are on surface streets. Freeway traffic is pretty slow in the mornings, but flows nicely in the evenings. With 1500 miles on a 2008 GS350, I get 24MPG each tank. I'm easy on the gas, and don't spend any time on warm up - just "start and go".
I wouldn't put any trust into the instant MPG display, but I'm getting an education from the trip computer's average MPG mode. It doesn't take much spirited driving to lower the average, and then takes a good bit of highway driving to get it back up again.
On the day I bought the car I got it home with 25 miles on the fresh tank, but after the complimentary car wash and idle time at the dealer while they showed me all the gadgets, the average was about 19MPG. After a 200 mile round trip to LA that night, it was indicating 28MPG when I put it back in the garage. Finishing up the tank with regular driving in the next couple of days brought it down below 25MPG by the time I had to fill the tank again.

Hes right, you dont need to warm up modern cars. On really cold days, let the engine run for maybe a min to get all the fluid circulating and go. Just take it real easy until the temp gauge gets up to proper temp, warm it up as you go.

I average about 16-19 most of the time, but i barely do any kind of highway driving. I live in the DC area so its all stop and go all the time. I hit like 10 traffic lights on the way to work.
After taking a road trip to PA though with cruise control I averaged about 25mpg. That was even with hitting 110mph in some places, some people like to think their car is faster .
Whats funny is I've realized that accelerating through the first 4 gears to about 50 to 60 and then just cruising off the gas results in high milage sometimes since the MPG gauge idles at 90mpg.
I had it at 36mpg once about 50 miles into the tank after a fill up, but there were a lot of hills .
