Key fob battery died
I got a message in the morning that said the key fob battery was low. When I went out after work, I had to use the metal key to open the door. When I tried to start the car, it said the key was not detected. I remembered reading that you should place the fob next to the start button and happy day the light went green and the car started. Drove to the Lexus dealer on the way home and the parts guy put a new battery in, no charge.
I read here:

that the cars with keyless start will start without a battery. Did anybody ever try it? I was going to put a spare battery in the glove box in case the battery goes dead in the fob, but maybe it's not needed.

I believe that In addition to the active transmitter, each key fob contains an RFID, which can be activated by external power (like EasyPass, for example). But for it to work, the key fob needs to be close to this external power source. Hence the need to put it close to the Start button.
