I think the 2nd gen GS looks great. In fact I almost bought a 2005 GS430 instead of a new GS350.

So far I have owned all 3 gens of GS. I never really cared for the shape of the 2nd gen but I had to buy one because my 1st gen was giving me major problems and I was 4-5 months from the 3rd gen hitting the showrooms. I grew to like it and kept it for a few years. I see some clean 2nd gen GS' out on the road and I think they look pretty nice. The only mods that impress me are tinted windows and a nice pair of wheels (correctly sized wheels) so when I see a 2nd gen with those I always give them a second look. But I will tell you the electronics on 2nd gen vs 3rd gen are night & day.

So do you want to spend 14k on a car entirely? Or could you use that as down payment and finance the rest?

And yeah, get what YOU like and not what other people like... It's your money, your car, your happiness and satisfaction and you shouldn't rely on other people's reaction for your own happiness.

I just want a Lexus that has the smart key system. I'm tired of locking and unlocking the car, turning the ignition, etc... I just want to run out, hop in, and go.

EN_VY - like everyone else said here - just get what you like and can afford. There will ALWAYS be someone out there who doesn't like what you get no matter what you get but honestly- why care? If you have friends that are like that, time to reconsider your friends bro. If your girl is like that - drop her - she'll always be looking for a guy with more.

Whatever you end up buying, please don't buy a Lexus and get all big headed. I see that too often and it just screams "I'm immature".

From a design perspective the 2GS is more aggresive than the 3GS. The 2GS was the "bad boy" Lexus of its era. The 3GS is more "mature".

Both have great detailing and STOCK a 3GS looks better, quite frankly with the 18s all it needs is a drop. IMO modded a 2GS looks better, it just looks more appropriate with mods. The 3GS you have to be careful b/c the styling is very complete stock.

Lexus cars and SUVs for the most part age well, outside the ES 250!!!

If you got a spanking new 3GS someone would still criticize. Just look at the threads we've had here with people criticizing the 3GS, the SC430 and more recently the 2IS being a girl's car. People will always pop off at the mouth. Get what you like.

As for me, I was just thinking about this subject. I don't feel the car is dated. I just never liked them stock, though. Dropped, rimmed and kitted the car is hot. If you're gonna mod it, go for it. If not, get one of those Monte Carlo's and put some 20's on it.

Congrats! It is very true that no matter what you buy people will
hate on it... The secretary in my office insists my 3GS is an OLD
MAN car and that I should not be driving it. I am sometimes tempted
myself to pick up a used 2nd gen GS430 cause I miss the low end torque
and it looks really cool with mods

But I gotta stop spending money on cars, LOL.

I love the way the 3GS looks but the 2GS seems better built than the 3GS.

I love the 3rd GEN GS but I am turned off by the smaller trunk space, smaller rear head room.

But I'm excited what the GS460 has to offer, maybe I'll get one used eventually if Lexus can improve on brake and steering feel.

Sorry, but IMO 2nd GS looked too much like Mercedes Benz's E-Class.

Oh I forgot, Lexus did COPIED the design from MB... So thanks but no thanks...

Actually I think it is an italian design that was shopped around and jaguar passed on it before lexus picked it up. I think I read that on here somewhere or wikipedia.

Where did you get that nonsense from? The exterior styling of the 2nd Generation GS looked absolutely NOTHING like the 1996-2002 E-class
The headlights of the GS evolved from the 1st gen Lexus SC that preceeded the E-class by a whopping 4 years for the 1992 model year. I do agree that the front end of the 2GS is similar to the E-class of that time, but that is the ONLY portion of the 2GS that even remotely resembles the E-class.
