Default GS Wins Segment Award, Lexus ties with BUICK for Most Dependable Brand (J.D. Power)

Thw GS line has won a segment award from J.D. Power and Associates as one of the most dependable cars in its class.

http://www.jdpower.com/press-release...spx?id=2007130

Buick ties with Lexus to rank highest among nameplates in vehicle dependability—marking the first time in 12 years that another brand ties with Lexus for the highest-rank position, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Vehicle Dependability Study.

Lexus garners five segment awards—the most of any nameplate in 2007—for the GS 350/GS430, GX 470, LS 430, LX 470 and SC 430.

yeah, but only old people drive buicks, and they only drive a few miles a week.
Of course the buicks won't break down that way...

also, the study was limited to 3-year old cars. So basically, the study was crap.
Almost all cars can be pretty dependible within 3 years.

But take a 1990 LS400, and compare it to a 1990 buick something.....

Or let's just start now, and in 8 years, compare a 2007 lex with a 2007 buick.

You misinterpreted the results a bit. The JD Power dependability survey results are based on 3 year old vehicles. The link you provided mentions in fact the GS300/GS430, *not* the GS350. This year's survey ranks the 2004 GS300/GS430 very highly. We would have to wait another 3 years before we get JD dependability results for the 2007 GS350/GS430.

The thing about Buicks is best demonstrated with the Tiger Woods commercial calling Onstar to unlock the car, so he doesn't have to break in with his 9 iron.

If he had a Lexus GS, the car would not let him lock his keys in the car.

We don't need no stinkin On-Star!

GM - always a few steps behind.

Study has some validity - if every 3-year old car was equally reliable, then there'd be no distinction between the rankings: every car manufacturer would be equally ranked within statistical tolerance for error.

But like others have pointed out, it has no relevance on 2006-2007 GS's since it's only for 2004 cars.

Another way of looking at this: Lexus dependability has dropped to that of a Buick.

Actually I think the 2004s were very, very dependable. I am thinking that may not be so, once the 2006-2007 models get compared.

I never took the JDPower surveys too seriously, even when Lexus was way ahead, but given that Buick has improved year after year, it has to make Toyota think about what is happening. My issue with the JDPower survey is that it's totally subjective, which it's suppose to be, but the Lexus owner is going to expect a higher level of quality than the Buick owner, so over the three years, what a Buick owner will accept, a Lexus owner will not. Take for instance fit-n-finish. If a trim on the door is misaligned slightly, the Lexus owner would make a note of it, while a Buick owner would probably feel that it's great that it's not totally misaligned. I wonder if they would break down and elaborate on what "issues" were reported.

Well, I just got a call today from Lexus, and they agreed to buy my 06 GS300 AWD back from me.

So - I'd tend to agree.

That comment actually had me spitting out my tea. Hahaha!

What truly surprises me is that we tied with GM. Buicks?? I didn't read the article, so I'm assuming that Mercedes and BMW did not rank with us at all?
