Default Engine Break In Period

My car is one week old with 900 miles. What is the deal with the break in period. Some people say drive the car easy, other say drive it hard. Any expert opinions?

I think most people drive it easy for the first 700-1000 miles...then after...break hell!!!

Age old question. Some engine builders say that you should red line it out of the dealership and drive it that way until the rings seat. Rather than slowly honing the cylinder walls, they say that it will create more of a precise lock and key fit with a unique fingerprint. The main thing though is that if you haven't driven your car that way from day one, it's already too late so stick to the factory recommended "gentle" break in method.

Drive it easy for the first 1000, that's your best guarantee to help ensure your valve cover seals don't leak out oil after a while.

i do dynamic break in..i first drive the car easy for about 300 or so miles, after that i drive it like i just stole it out of the dealer, with out hitting redline of course but bringing each gear close to redline...the first 300 or so miles will hone the cylinder walls, while after the 300 mile when your driving the living ***** out of the car this will help seat the rings properly during hard driving...keep in mind the 3gs is not a F1 race car so there is only so much you can drive the car like a sports car..oh yes after the first 1000miles i would change my oil

When I picked my 2007 GS350 from Longo I had to take the 10fwy to get home. SO I got on it and hit 80 at 2800rpm and I got scared because I rembered break-in...lol

but

I kept it under 4000rpm for 1000miles and went WOT after that.

The best experts for the GS are Lexus engineers, and they say break-in is the first 1000 km, or about 650 miles (according to the manual).

Related Q on break-ins: the sales guy told me that I would notice more responsiveness/quickness at about 5K. Am at about 3.3K and seems with each passing week that it feels that way, but am open to the possibility that it is my mind playing tricks on me or that I am just getting more comfortable with how the car drives. Am curious as to whether other people have heard the same and/or had similar experiences. . .

The transmission ECU adapts to your driving style in order to provide smoother shifts.

As far as responsiveness goes, flip the ECT PWR to on and a more aggressive shift pattern will engage.
