Exclamation Why Do People Use 245/35/20 F And 275/30/20 R? Front Tire Larger Than Rear

i AM CONFUSED AS WHY ALOT OF US ARE RUNNING 245/35 IN FRONT WITHA REAR 275/30 THAT MEANS THAT THE FRONT TIRE IS .8 INCHES LARGER IN DIAMETER. DOES ANYONE FEEL IT LOOKS STUPID OR IS IT NOT NOTICEABLE? BY THE WAY A 245/35 TIRE IS 1.1 INCHES LARGER IN DIAMETER THAN THE STOCK. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY ITS THE MOST POPULAR SIZE. IS IT BEC WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT DENTING THEM?

just looking at the tire size isn't enough. you have to look at the wheel width as well. if you put 245/35 on 9" wide wheels and then 275/30 on 10", front and rear will actually look pretty similar.

if you just do pure math, 245/35 and 285/30 are perfect match, but you need the right widths of rims to match it as well.

also, for 20", running out of spec tires is to maintain a certain thickness of sidewall to get better ride comfort and also to reduce the chances of bending wheels. by all means 245/30 and 275/25 (if you can find it) are the right size diameter wise, use them at your own risk. it's quite some rubber band.

i know people rubbing 255/30/20 and 295/25/20 on his gs, within spec, but he doesn't drive the car that often

If it's not the 350 AWD, there is a slight grip advantage to having larger rear tires, since they are the driving wheels. Then again, with the "minimal" amount of the horsepower the GS has, it's probably more detrimental to have larger tires.

guys, read the OP post carefully..... he's talking about the overall diameter. and he said the front is actually 0.8" larger than the rear... he's not talking about the width of tires...

btw, i just did the math (hypothetically), 245/35/20 diameter is 26.75. 275/30/20 diameter is 26.49. so difference is less than 0.3". 285/30/20 would have diameter of 26.73, almost perfect match with 245/35. so seriously, this is very marginal difference...

You're kidding right?
You consider 300 hp minimal??

my setup. 20 x 9 and 20 x 10.5. front tires running 235 30 20 and rear tires is 255 30 20. running this setup for the look and also for clearence front and rear. i can actually dump my bags all the way down and still able to roll with out rubbing anything. hope that helps to answer your question.

cliffnotes: i run those tire sizes to have clearence to not rub.

Default Width or Diameter

That's why I put "minimal" in quotes. Unlike the funny car drag racers that have thousands of HP all going to rear (thus the huge rear tires), the GS's HP (or anything less than say 500 hp) would probably not warrant larger width tires in the rear. Since yes, they'll have more grip on launch, but then that same grip (or road resistance) is there through cruising as well, thus reducing fuel mileage. For me, I think any mid size/small large size sedan with 250hp is plenty enough for everyday driving.

Thanks For The Help. Im Still On The Fence Between 255/30 And 245/35. 255/30 Is Still 1.2 Percent Over Spec. The 245/35 Is 3.89 Percent Out Of Spec. My Friend Who Engineers Cars For Nissan Says That To Avoid Abs Failure THAT You SHOULD Try To Keep The Tire Size Within 3 Percent FROM SPEC. I Know This Sounds Like Technical B.s But The Guy Has A Degree And A High Paying Job Specializing In Auto Design And Engineering.

I Dont Know How The Ballers With The 22's Do It. That Is Close To 8-10 Percent Out Of Spec

i don't know much about mechanical engineering on that, but the abs system on my gs400 and sc430 works(ed) just fine with the 20s (out of spec)
