Okay ladies and gents. For the life of me, I really cannot figure out why Lexus would put the same tranny and engine from the LS 460 in the GS 460 but rate it at 342hp. Now it is a 50hp bump, since the outgoing GS 430's new SAE rating was 290. Still though, why not the full 380?
So, could a GS-F or GS 500 be coming, with the 5.0 in the IS-F and LS 600h L? Then it would make sense to dumb down the GS 460 hp.
IMO, this would have been a terrific GS lineup
-GS 300-240hp-
-GS 350-306hp
-GS 450h-340hp
-GS 460-342hp
-GS 500/F-415hp
What do ya'll think?

true but happens more often than not... MB C63, E63, S63 amg have different horsepower too... they tune down the lower class model so that the upper class still remains more desirable...

^ IMHO, if overall 3GS sales don't pick up, we won't see a GS-F (or equivalent). GS430 sales for MY07 is less than 400 units - you can argue that potential buyers are waiting for the GS460, but still 400 ? GS450h sales are around 2,000 units. If the 460 doesn't outsell the 450h, I don't think the GS-F will ever be built. . .

I like the logic...
I just hope that Lexus is acting logically
Like you, I can't figure out why they would put the 8 speed transmission and the 4.6L V8 in the new GS and then tune it down to 342 HP... unless it's to make room for something else in the line up. I mean why go to the added expense of having another variant of the 4.6L V8?
With the launch of the 2nd Gen GS 400 in 1998, and again with the GS 430 in 2001, the GS model offered the highest HP (and highest fun factor) of any Lexus model. That has changed recently with the IS 350 and now the LS 460.
I hope that Lexus remedies the current situation with a line up like the one you posted.

It would not surprise me to see Lexus do a GS500 without all the "F" stuff. As tuned for the 600h, the 5 liter engine makes about 389 hp. Mated to the 8 speed auto, this would provide a high power premium GS to compete with cars like the E55, 550, and A6 without all the sport compromises in the AMG, S, and M cars. It would be hard to compete with the AMG 6.3 or the M V-10engines with a 5 liter, so the GS-F will have to wait.
Just my opinion.

Personally, I think Lexus messed up here. The gap between the GS350, GS450h, and GS460 is just too small. If the rumoured GS-F will have close to 500HP, then the GS460 should have 380HP. The GS is not that competitive, and I know that Lexus knows that, yet WHY are they releasing the GS460 with only 342HP? Doesn't make sense really.
A GS-F with 415 - 430HP honestly would be a waste of time. If they do make a GS-F, at the VERY least it needs at least 480 - 500HP to maintain a gap between it and the IS-F.

If sales don't pick up b/c it's a disappointment (speculating) and people are jumping ship to AMG, //M, S.
Hopefully, that will

You give Lexus alot of credit, if I was shopping for a E63/M5/S6, any GS variant would not make the list (GS-F or not). Altho a properly tuned GS460 should be able to play with a E500/550i/A6. Jury is still out to see if the IS-F can truly 'compete' with a C63/M3/RS4, guess we'll soon find out.

imho, to a gs-f would have to compete with rs-6, e63, m5 type of cars which now must have at least a v10 and/or supercharged/turbocharged to be competitve. the most likely scenario i see is a GS-F with a detuned LF-A V10. The lineup then would look like:
GS350: 3.5L V6 306hp
GS460: 4.6L V8 342hp
GS-h: LS-h v8 5.0L hybrid setup 390hp
GS- F: LF-A detuned V10 460hp
GS350: 3.5L V6 306hp
GS460: 4.6L V8 342hp
GS-h: LS-h v8 5.0L hybrid setup 390hp
GS- F: LF-A detuned V10 460hp
