so far i have only heard of problems on 08 or those upgraded to 7.1. if you have 07 (seems like so) and don't plan on upgrading the nav, then you should be ok

There has been some back and forth on this. I know what issues I had with my 06GS with gen4 nav using v7 data. Are the 08 owners and the non08 people with v7 nav dvd having the same issues? What are the specific problems?

Is the only issue for 7.1 the navigation features only work for 30 seconds? As long as that's disclosed prominently, some owners might not decide that's a deal breaker. At least until a workaround is figured out.

After all, cutting wires on a new car, any new car, is a pretty scary proposition. I've wondered over here from the ES board and would really like a plug and play option rather than the current wire cutting solution.

My thoughts exactly. I have the 30 second window which was a surprise limitation but am considering that against the alternative of 0 seconds or wire cutting. I just want to figure out whether or not to be wary of my unit as defective or if they all work that way with certain configurations but it seems everybody has abandoned this thread.

I believe others also had problems with mp3 cd/dvds playing which was a deal breaker for many but i can't speak to that one first hand.

You mean playing cd/dvds with a ton of .mp3 files on them? I have none of those so it wouldn't be a deal breaker. If it's burned cds with .wav files converted from .mp3 files, that might be a deal breaker.

not abandoning this thread, but the working unit (tested) i put in my car (08, 7.1) also had that silly 30 secs limitation. i still can't figure out what's different and whether for sure it's 7.1 software issue.

Henry,

I was reading and following this threat for a couple of days already. As you know i'll be getting my 08 GS350 this week. I'm still deciding which way to bypass and overide my nav/dvd on my car. I really hate the 30 seconds thing that people are complaining when using the nav hack plug and play kit. Just my suggestion, why dont you try bypassing the antenna? I know this kit bypasses the VSS, but i think the dvd drive and nav still senses car movement cuz the antenna still tracks info via satellite.

my gripe with the 30 seconds was that is was unexpected. Advertised to be about 5 min so I thought my kit might be defective. If others have seen the same behavior, then it's not and I suspect your antenna idea is on the mark. For full disclosure, I have figured out that if you are in the middle of the input when the 30 seconds expires, you don't 'lose' your place. You can click the override swtich off for a few seconds, then flip it back on, get another 30 seconds, and continue with the input wihtout starting over. it's a workaround for sure and annoying. on the plus side I guess, is that because of the way it works, when you finish the input and turn the override off it doesnt take more than few seconds for the car position cursor to recalibrate to your exact location even tho it stayed stationary during the 30 seconds. again, i imagine behavior that supports the antenna explanation.

After using it a few days, i find that 30 seconds is often enough to put in a direct address (now that I know i have a time limit i go faster). I often have to go back for a 2nd try when locating a poi by name which takes more list browsing.

Henry

I ran a test over the weekend in my 08 IS350 cuz this thread has been on my mind too..

I accessed the Tech Diagnosis screen by pressing the DISP & the touch corner Up/Down trick.. There is the Nav Diagnosis and then find the selection for Speed Calibration.. It will show the actual MPH and KM/H of the car while in motion...

When traveling on the freeway doing 70mph or so, I accessed the Tech menu and I went to where it showed me how fast I was going on the Nav.

I then pressed the NAV override button and it went straight to ZERO MPH & KM/H.. for the full 5 mins..

Try this test on your 08 GS and see if that reading of ZERO MPH & KM/H is picked up for the 30 secs or for the full 5 min time out feature on the override module..
or if it still reads actual vehicle traveling speed....

I think you know where I am going with this..

Hey Joe,

I was actually trying that out just as I left your house on Saturday. There is also a diagnostic menu that shows you if your Parking Brake is engaged and etc. When you press the TV override button, it shows the parking brake as engaged on the diagnostic menu.

I also found out my speedo is reading 2mph higher than what is being displayed on the diagnostic menu.

Henry,

As requested, I tested the Destination screen w/the NAV override and timed it. I got the 5 minutes as everyone else is getting before it grays out.

Also it still says GPS at the top left underneath the compass indicator during all the functions.
