2008 GS350 Obsidian paint, clear coat or no clear coat?
Newbie here! I just got my GS350 AWD blk/blk last night. One quick question for you experts out here. Is there a clear coat over the Obsidian paint? I call the 1-800-25-Lexus already, they were no help. So now I am turning to the real experts for help. Thanks guys.

Obsidian Black is single stage. I don't know why you guys are so quick to assume that no manufacturers use single stage paint anymore, but many still do in their lineups. Obsidian Black LS, GS, GS are all single stage. Another example of single stage paint on modern cars is Honda. Many of their white Accords are known to be single stage paints. Yes, it's a little hard to believe, but it's true.

I work in the collision repair industry. 212 Obsidian is a one stage as mentioned above. Not all Toyota/Lexus paints have clear applied at the factory. Most modern bodyshops however will spray a clear coat on almost all finishes, even if it does not require it.
Now if we're talking metallics, micas and pearls, those certain do have a factory clear.

There are 2 possible things I can think of:
1) Your paint is not oxidized
2) You're probably not using an agressive polishing compound and pressure or down force to take a paint layer off.

You sure you want to take a layer of paint off just to check? Not really a smart idea. Your LS came hand wet sanded and polished from the factory.
