gotcha. i didn't know about this. this is pretty big piece of information to me actually. so it seems like the 3gs nav system is indeed quite different from the 2is and 4ls.
umm i need to think through this more and see why (and whether there is a fix)
3gs is so troublesome

I did the 5.1/6.1 Hybrid disk because of the time limit when using the switch. Using the 5.1/6.1 hybrid disk there is no time limit. Once you enable the override your NAV system is usable while driving until you turn the engine off. After restarting the engine you must again re-enable the override function. It takes about 10-15 seconds. You can even enable the override while driving.
It appears that a 5.1/7.1 hybrid disk cannot be made to work (no override). Because of this I checked on the map upgrades between 6.1 and 7.1. I live in the west and there were so few map upgrades and they were mostly in small cities that even if I had a 2008 (mine is a 2007) I would rather have the override capability than the slightly improved mapping that is in 7.1. My point is, if I had a 2008 I would fall back to the 5.1/6.1 hybrid disk so my wife could use the NAV system while I was driving.

Yes I have tried two different originals GEN5 5.1 (non hybrid) disc on my car, it wont load/read the disc. I also tried an original GEN5 6.1 (non hybrid) disc on my car and it doesnt load/read as well. I think the computer/ecu hardware on the 08 and newer GS is programmed/blocked not to read older firmware.

To bad! Mama Lexus wins again. If I get another Lexus I'll skip the NAV system and save the $2,000.00 because the newest Garmin Nuvi 5000 has a big screen like in the Lexus dash, costs about $800, works when driving, is easily moved between cars so we only need to learn one set of NAV commands for all three of our vehicles, and it includes XM Radio, Bluetooth, MP3 player, and has a plug to accommodate a rear camera.

be careful with that one. varied results and the original thread on this is hard to follow but you may run into the 30-60 second limit with 07 GS and 7.1. check this thread out starting with post #94 or #96 if you don't want to sift through the whole thing. sometimes it's not clear what year model people are talking about but if you read the thread in entirety you see that there was a lot of swirl so at least buyer beware i think. so many variables it's hard to tell, at least for me.
anyway 30 seconds isn't end of world but don't rule it out as a possibility. you can flick it off for a few, flick it back on and get another 30 seconds. you can start where you left off so a 2nd round is usually enough i find.
