Default Lighting/HID Primer

Everybody seems to be into swapping out bulbs & lamps... What is the deal with lights? I haven't a clue about any of this. Could any of the club members who are knowledgeable, offer your insight to educate this HID flunky?

Other than personalizing your ride, what benefits are there?
Why are 6000K bulbs so popular?
How difficult is swapping bulbs in the GS series?

Thanks for any who offer their help!

6000K looks whiter but not as bright, especially in the rain, I guess its form over function.

Theres a lot of info out there, including pictures of people showing their stock bulbs versus the new ones they installed. Many people also want their foglamps to be as close to the same color and intensity as the low beams. People are also changing out the high beams (which are also the day time running lights) and the parking lights (which run at night when the low beams are on).
The criticism of Lexus lights is that they are not as blue as the german cars, especially bmw and audi. Coming from a 5-series, I loved the look of those bulbs and I wish mine now were bluer. So I am also doing research into what all I want to do.

here, I thought the 6000k bulbs were bluer than stock, but not as blue as the 8000k. IIRC, the stock bulbs are more in line with 4300k

The stock bulbs are 4300K. Try to get the headlight whiter is all well and good as long as you dont lose brightness. The German car use a different projector to get the whiter light.

I could go on and on about HID so instead of typing them all up, thanks to our moderator henry, there is a FAQ thread.

Please read this

it will tell you everything you need to know, however, to answer your question, we change our hid bulbs to 6000k+ is purely for the color, you sacrifice the brightness for better color output (stock 4300k is considered YELLOW to some of us)

6000k will give you much better color (purple at start --> white when warm up) but you give up the lumen. Most of us believe that's the best compromise. I've been running 6000k low beam and 6000k fog for all my cars.

swapping bulbs will take 10-15 mins tops

*don't be fooled by people telling you that BMW/AUDI run different bulbs so the color look so good on them. It's the same bulbs produced by Osram/Philips all rated at around 4300k. it's the projector design that give its distinctive cut-off line that on coming traffic will see it as extra purple/blue. In reality, behind the driver seats, it's all the same.

BMW enthusiasts still change the bulbs to 6000k+ it simply just looks better imo

No mercury = less intensity

I thought the DS2 and DS4 have the same lumens. Whlkev, you are right DS4 is the mercury free version and runs on lower voltage.
