Ouch. I always carry my torque wrench with me especially on long distance trips. The 76 ft/lbs of torque is factory spec for Lexus and Toyota across the board, don't go any more than that.

Agreed 76Lb is ok for factory rims but want about 20” rims? Got the answer, when I bought my GS off the show room floor they had the 20” rim set up. I talked to the owner of the shop that did the set up for the dealership on many of there Lexus cars they sell. I had many question for him. He gave me a lot of information on this 20” rims and how to care for them. If I should remove the rims and later put them back on the car always torque them to 85lb then check them again after 50 miles, always use a good quality torque wrench.

size of wheel does NOT matter. if you have aftermarket, even with 18s, the lug nut could have quite a few less threads than factory. that's why on aftermarket wheels i usually put 80lb. 85 is ok, but i really wouldn't go above that

Looking at the photo of your stud and lugnut, was it possible that the lugnuts had bottomed out on the stud? Were the lugnuts 1.25 or 1.50 in length?
